Marc Maron is offering a mea culpa when it comes to his longtime feud with Jon Stewart.

When asked in a new interview with *Esquire* about a feud with his fellow comedian, the *WTF* podcaster took responsibility for the beef, and said it "was just petty" and "fully fueled by insecurity" of his own.

"Jon never did anything to me," Maron clarified. "I was just jealous."

He continued, "[I was] just jealous because when I was coming up, you know, he was this smart, cute Jewish guy who was good at — some people have foresight and are disciplined careerists and they know how to understand their talent, harness it, and then figure out how to capitalize on it, you know, with their skill set, on their terms."

While he felt that Stewart embodied that, Maron said, for his part, he has always felt like he "never had any control over" his own talent. "I never knew its limitations or what it was. I was just all in and just like demanding a place in the world of comedy," he explained.

Maron continued, "So throughout my early career, Jon, he was roughly my age, was just everywhere. It never stopped, you know? I remember when he did the MTV show and then he had the talk show and he had me on, but my envy of him was always so — I would just s--- on him, and to his face, like, 'Who the f--- do you think you are?'"**

Maron described his envy as "consuming" thanks to the fact he "couldn't get through a week without [Stewart] being on the cover of a magazine." He added, "And for some reason, I saw him as like, 'If I could only have my s--- together I could be more like that guy.'"

Maron went on to say that he knew he had to hold on to his "big belief" that if he just stayed true to his own talents and strengths and who he was, that he'd eventually have his own success in the industry. Still, he admitted it was frustrating to him that Stewart seemed to do all of this effortlessly.

"I was annoying to him," Maron admitted. "Eventually he was like, 'I don't need to take this s--- from you and f--- Maron.' But I get it."

When asked if he ever considered having Stewart on his beloved podcast, which ended on Oct. 13 after a whopping 1,686 episodes, Maron said he offered *The Daily Show* star a spot one time in the podcast's nascent days.

"I remember I was in Portland, Oregon, and I was like, 'Yeah, I do this podcasting and I'm kind of apologizing. I'm kind of making up with people and you know, you and I have had this thing for a while,'" Maron recalled saying to Stewart. According to him, Stewart replied, "'Well, yeah, I just, you know, there's no love here.' And I'm like, 'Okay.'"

Maron concluded, "And then he basically said, 'Yeah, I might be willing to have coffee or something, but yeah, I'm not doing that [podcast] with you.' And then he said, 'I'm sure what you're doing is very creative. Good luck with it.' Just the stinging condescension of that was like, it didn't help anything. And now he's doing a podcast, so, full circle."**
