According to multiple reports, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr is set to start for the Wolverines on Saturday. Carr entered the game for Bryce Underwood in the second half of Michigan's 21-18 win over Penn State.

Michigan trailed 3-0 at halftime as Underwood threw an interception when the Wolverines were attempting to get into field goal range before the break. The sophomore was 5-of-11 passing for 43 yards and had two picks.

Carr only threw the ball seven times, but he completed five of those passes for 47 yards. He also rushed four times for 36 yards thanks to a 22-yard run and also scored a touchdown on a 12-yard run that ended up being Michigan's game-winning score after a late Penn State field goal.

A true freshman from Saline, Michigan, Carr is the brother of Notre Dame QB CJ Carr. He was a three-star recruit in the class of 2026 and the No. 37 QB in the country according to Rivals.

If Carr plays well against Michigan, there's no reason to think coach Kyle Whittingham won't give him another opportunity against Rutgers in Week 9. Underwood, a former five-star recruit whose large NIL deal has gotten a lot of scrutiny amid his struggles, is 72-of-124 passing for 924 yards and five touchdowns with six interceptions. He's also taken eight sacks while rushing 60 times for 223 yards and two scores.

Underwood was Michigan's starter as a true freshman in 2025 and completed 60% of his passes for 2,428 yards and 11 TDs with nine interceptions. He also rushed 88 times for 392 yards and six scores. The 2026 season also marks his second offensive system in as many years with the Wolverines. After Sherrone Moore's firing, Michigan hired Whittingham after he parted ways with Utah and Whittingham brought along offensive coordinator Jason Beck.
