Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, has been missing for nine months now — and a retired FBI agent speculated on the significance of detectives flying to a Florida lab.
In an interview with NewsNation senior national correspondent Brian Entin on the November 2 episode of Brian Entin Investigates, retired FBI agent Steve Moore weighed in on recent developments in the 84-year-old’s case. This included Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos’ rare update on evidence.
Nanos shared in an October 30 statement via X, “Earlier this month, investigators traveled to Florida to meet with lab scientists to see what more could be done to advance the case. A number of ideas were discussed, and we continue to work with all of our partners to solve this case.”
To that, Entin asked Moore, “Why would you fly all the way to Florida unless there was something that you could maybe work out eventually?”
“That to me indicates that they have viable DNA,” Moore said. “Doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to be probative — that it’s going to make the case. But it means that they have probably some unidentified DNA or partial DNA, and they’re trying to determine the best way to leverage it to see if it’s viable or not, if it’s good evidence or not.”
The former supervising special agent added, “So I would agree with you. It is indicative of the fact that there is good information there, potentially.”

Additionally, Moore weighed in on the impact of Savannah’s renewed plea to Nancy’s kidnappers nine months after her mom disappeared.
“This isn’t going to hurt,” Moore said. “And really, I think it’s very possible if the notes saying this wasn’t intended and all this kind of stuff, it really indicates that if that’s the people who took Nancy, that maybe there’s some compassion somewhere deep inside there. And if that’s the case, maybe they see Savannah in this kind, I mean really prolonged, slow-motion grief…”
He continued, “I just feel for her. I can’t imagine what she’s going through. And at the same time, she’s vulnerable enough to let the entire world know that she’s having trouble getting through this. This is the reality of working with victims’ families. And I, in a very tragic fortunate way, had to deal with people who knew the outcome of their families, who had the bodies. I can’t imagine somebody who is going through that who doesn’t have any closure.”
Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on January 31, with her family reporting her missing on February 1. Since then, investigators have released photos of a masked suspect on her front porch and published alleged ransom notes. Savannah has also offered a $1 million reward. However, no suspect has been named in the case, as of writing.
