The 19-year-old shortstop agreed to a nine-year, $140 million contract with the Pirates early Wednesday, less than a week after the former first-round pick made his major league debut.

The deal, the largest in club history, includes escalators that could raise the total value to $150 million.

“Signing Konnor is a meaningful commitment to this team, this city and our fans,” owner Bob Nutting said in a statement. “It reflects our belief in Konnor, in this season's club and in the future of the organization.”

The agreement comes less than 24 hours after general manager Ben Cherington said the “ingredients” were in place for a long-term pact.

The Pirates selected Griffin with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 amateur draft. He sprinted through the team's farm system, hitting .333 with 21 home runs, 94 RBIs and 65 stolen bases. He was one of the final cuts during spring training last month, and his stay at Triple-A Indianapolis was brief.

Pittsburgh called Griffin to the majors after just a week, and he has played well through his first handful of games. Griffin laced an RBI-double in his first big-league at bat against Baltimore last Friday, and added a pair of hits, including a two-run single, in a 7-1 win over San Diego on Tuesday night that helped the Pirates to their sixth win in seven games.

Griffin, who has said repeatedly he wants to stay in Pittsburgh for as long as possible, has impressed teammates with his maturity and his unique skillset.

Reigning NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes called Griffin “a big leaguer through and through,” though Griffin is doing his best to ignore the attention that has surrounded his arrival for a team that is trying to return to relevance and end a playoff drought that's now over a decade old.

“Just sticking to being myself, not trying to do too much,” Griffin said Tuesday night. "Just let the game tell me the situation. Compete one pitch at a time and let it all happen.”

Trump and Iran both claim ceasefire victory. Who does it really help?

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration and Iranian leaders both have claimed victory in thetemporarily paused U.S.-Israel war on Iraneven as details of thetwo-week ceasefireare being disputed.

USA TODAY

So who actually blinked first and who really came out on top?

There’s no clear answer, with much of the details hidden beneath layers of secretive multi-party negotiations and changing dynamics. Andkey detailsremain in dispute, including the future of Iran's uranium enrichment program and whether the ceasefire applies to Israeli military action in Lebanon, which already threatens to unravel the shaky detente.

As of mid-afternoon April 8, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged that while the U.S. has seen some movement, the strait through which 20 percent of the world’s oil passes was not fully open for business.

"We have seen an uptick in traffic in the strait today and I will reiterate the president's expectation and demand that the Strait of Hormuz is reopened immediately, quickly and safely,” Leavitt said.

Later in the day,Vice President JD Vancetold reporters Wednesday in Budapest, Hungary, "If we don't see that happening, the President is not going to abide by our terms if the Iranians are not abiding by their terms."

Here’s what we know about initial winners and losers in the ceasefire, which was announced just hours before Trump’s 8 p.m. ET deadline on April 7 for Iran to open the straitor face annihilation.

What are both sides saying about the ceasefire?

Trump delayed the strikes on Iran that he said wouldwipe out a “whole civilization”after receiving a 10-point proposal from the Islamic Republic that he said provided a “workable basis” for negotiations.

The morning after the ceasefire was announced, Pentagon chiefPete Hegsethdeclared the U.S. military campaign on Iran a “historic and overwhelming victory.”

Hegseth said the U.S. armed forces “achieved every military objective” set out at the start of the war, including the destruction of Iran’s navy, air force and weapons manufacturing infrastructure.

“President Trumpforged this moment,” he said. “Iran begged for this ceasefire and we all know it.”

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council hasalso claimed victoryfollowing a ceasefire deal Tuesday evening, saying the U.S. and Israel were forced to accept Tehran’s 10-point plan.

Leavitt disputed public claims about the 10-point plan circulating publicly, including by the Iranian government.

The real details, Leavitt said at a White House news conference, are being discussed in back-channel negotiations between Washington and Tehran that are being facilitated by the government of Pakistan. A meeting is set forthis weekend in the capitalof Islamabad and Vance is scheduled to attend, the White House said.

What does Iran's ceasefire proposal actually do?

Iran’s exact proposal has not been made public. But many versions of itcirculating publiclycall for American troops to leave the Middle East, for Iran to continue its control over the strategic strait and to maintain its right to nuclear enrichment.

In a public statement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said its own officials, and Iran’s supreme leader,Mojtaba Khamenei, approved the plan.

FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump, flanked by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, speaks during a press conference in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 6, 2026. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo

The statement is long and rambling, and full of religious references and attacks on the United States and Israel, Washington’s partner in the war on Iran, as “global evil Zionism,” according to atranslation of it by Middle East Eye, an independent news and analysis site.

But the statement by the Iranian council includes some specifics of Iran’s proposal that it said the U.S. accepts as a starting point, including “controlled passage through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with Iran’s armed forces” and ending U.S. and Israeli military aggression against Iran and its Lebanese proxy fighting force Hezbollah.

It also includes the withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from all bases and deployment points in the region, the full payment of Iran’s damages from the war and the removal “of all primary and secondary sanctions” against Iran, including the release of all blocked Iranian properties and assets abroad, the statement said.

“Now, the honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan has informed Iran that the American side, despite all outward threats, has accepted these principles as the basis for negotiations and has surrendered to the will of the Iranian nation,” the statement said.

When the details of Tehran’s 10-point plan are finalized, it said, “Iran’s victory on the field shall also be consolidated in political negotiations.”

What is the Trump administration saying?

Both Vance and Leavitt said in their public remarks that elements of the Iranian regime is “lying” about the nature of the ceasefire agreement. Both also emphasized that the truce is a fragile one.

“The Iranians originally put forward a 10-point plan that was fundamentally unserious, unacceptable, and completely discarded,” Leavitt said at the White House briefing.

Leavitt did not disclose any details of the “new modified plan” but said Trump determined it formed a “workable basis on which to negotiate and to align it with our own 15-point proposal.”

“The president's red lines, namely the end of Iranian enrichment in Iran, have not changed,” she said. “And the idea that President Trump would ever accept an Iranian wishlist as a deal is completely absurd.”

Since the ceasefire was announced, conflicting accounts have emerged, for instance, over whether Lebanon is included in the agreement. Pakistan, one of the deal's mediators, and Iran said the pause in fighting would indeed extend to Lebanon. Israel has denied this, while Trump has said the Israeli war on Hezbollah is a "separate skirmish."

What are Trump's critics saying?

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and vocal critic of Trump, posted on X some detailsof Iran’s 10-point plan that he said was from “an account close to the Iranian leadership.” The account said that during the ceasefire, “only about 10 to 15 ships will be permitted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran's approval," in coordination with Iran's navy and after payment of tolls and a commitment to remove a U.S. freeze on Iranian assets.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 7: Protesters hold signs during a demonstration against U.S. military action in Iran on April 7, 2026 in New York City. U.S. President Donald Trump, who had previously set a deadline for 8 p.m. ET for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face widespread attacks on its civilian infrastructure, agreed this evening to suspend the bombing for two weeks as part of a temporary ceasefire deal, which also includes lifting sanctions and accepting Iran's nuclear enrichment. (Photo by Ryan Murphy/Getty Images)

Tehran also “will control and toll the Strait for the first time," the X posting cited by Murphy said. "They keep their nuclear program. They keep their missiles.”

“We are now seeing the shape of why Iran agreed so enthusiastically to this "ceasefire," Murphy said. “What a disaster.”

Another TACO move, or "Trump always chickens out"

Numerous observers said agreeing to a ceasefire with Iran was another example of a Trump “TACO,” short for "Trump always chickens out," a term that first went viral during Trump’son-again, off-again tariff policies.

“This wasno ordinary Trump TACO, this was Trump accepting Iran's victory conditions as the basis of negotiations,” said Phillips O’Brien, professor of Strategic Studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and author of the 2025 book, “War and Power: Who Wins Wars and Why.”

“It looks likely that Iran will emerge stronger from this war than before; a total US strategic failure,” O’Brien said in an April 8 post on X.

'Strong first step toward holding Iran accountable'

Some of Trump’s supporters in Congress cheered Trump’s acceptance of a short-term ceasefire as a smart tactical victory.

“Excellent news,” RepublicanSen. Rick Scott of Florida, said shortly after Trump announced the ceasefire. “This is a strong first step toward holding Iran accountable and what happens when you have a leader who puts peace through strength over chaos and weak appeasement policies.”

“The president has been clear: Iran must NEVER have a nuclear weapon, the Strait of Hormuz MUST be completely open, and our country and our great ally Israel must NEVER be threatened again by Iran or its proxies,” Scott said.

Skenes (2-1), who was rocked during anopening day loss to the New York Mets, struck out six and walked two in 6 1/3 innings while lowering his ERA to 5.54. The Padres' first of two hits against the 23-year-old was a clean single to left by Fernando Tatis Jr. with one out in the sixth.

Xander Bogaerts homered off Skenes — the first round-tripper given up by a Pittsburgh starter this season — with one out in the seventh. Skenes exited to a loud ovation from the announced crowd of 9,061 on a chilly night as the Pirates won for the sixth time in seven games.

Oneil Cruz hit a two-run double off Nick Pivetta (1-2) in the fifth and Nick Gonzales added a two-run single to start a five-run eighth for the Pirates. Skenes and three relievers combined on a three-hitter.

Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin picked up the second and third hits of his major league career. The 19-year-old had an infield single in the fifth and scored from first on Cruz's laser down the left field line. He added a line drive to center for a two-run single in the eighth, a few hours after Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said some ingredientsfor a long-term contractfor Griffin were “in place.”

Pivetta was dominant through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. The veteran right-hander gave up two runs on four hits with a walk and a season-high eight strikeouts.

2026 NFL mock draft with trades: Jets get more picks, Chargers fill need

It’s mock draft season as the 2026 NFL draft is fast approaching.

USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh is the host city of the 91stedition of the NFL draft. It’s the first time the Steel City’s hosted the draft since 1948.

Indiana product and Heisman Trophy recipient, Fernando Mendoza, is the surefire No. 1 pick after a national championship winning season. But this year’s draft is a mystery after the Las Vegas Raiders presumably get their quarterback with the top overall selection.

A total of 257 players will be selected throughout the three-day event. USA TODAY Sports’ Tyler Dragon makes some draft predictions in his 2026 first round mock draft:

1. Las Vegas Raiders - QB Fernando Mendoza, Indiana

Mendoza is one of the biggest locks at No. 1 in recent memory. The only question is how many games Mendoza will start as a rookie now that the Raiderssigned a bridge QB and mentor Kirk Cousins. Mendoza is a polished quarterback, accurate passer and a good processor.

2. New York Jets – Edge Arvell Reese, Ohio State

Reese has the versality to play on the line of scrimmage or off the ball. At 6-foot-4, he has the length, athleticism and quickness to be a standout edge rusher. Reese would be an ideal fit in New York’s 3-4 defense.

3. Arizona Cardinals – Edge David Bailey, Texas Tech

The Cardinals have a plethora of holes – as do most teams at the top of the draft. Arizona could target an offensive tackle with an offensive-minded first-year head coach in Mike LaFleur. But Bailey is too intriguing of a prospect to pass up. Bailey is explosive at the line of scrimmage with multiple go-to moves.

4. Tennessee Titans – RB Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame

The Titans have to supply second-year QB Cam Ward with more weapons. Who better than the best running back in this year’s draft? Many scouts believe Love is the top offensive player in this year’s class. The Titans had the 30thranked run offense in the NFL in 2025.

5. New York Giants – LB Sonny Styles, Ohio State

The Giants already have a stout front seven. Plugging in Styles at linebacker alongside Tremaine Edmunds would only bolster the unit. New York could also pivot and target an offensive player, but Styles is an elite tackler and boasts the athleticism that will immediately translate to the NFL.

6. Cleveland Browns – WR Carnell Tate, Ohio State

Tate possesses good agility and body control, which helps him run the route tree. Jerry Jeudy was Cleveland’s only wide receiver with over 25 receptions last season. Tate would be a nice complement to Jeudy – and aidwhoever starts at QB.

7. Washington Commanders - S Caleb Downs, Ohio State

The run of Ohio State players continues as Downs is the fourth Buckeye selected in the first seven picks. Downs is a playmaker in the defensive backfield. He possesses good ball skills. He can play in the box and line up at nickel corner. Plus, he has the IQ to be an anchor in Washington’s secondary.

8. New Orleans Saints – WR Jordyn Tyson, Arizona State

New Orleans ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in total offense last season. Chris Olave, who is routinely on the trading block, is entering the final year of his contract. Tyson will give the Saints necessary insurance if Olave leaves or would create a solid one-two punch on the outside for promising young QB Tyler Shough.

9. Kansas City Chiefs – Edge Rueben Bain Jr., Miami

The Chiefs need a disruptive playmaker other than Chris Jones on their defensive line. Plenty has been made ofBain’s arm length, but he’s the most polished edge rusher in this year’s class. He has explosive hands plus an assortment of moves to shed blocks.

10. Cincinnati Bengals – CB Mansoor Delane, LSU

The Bengals had the worst total defense in the AFC last season. Cincinnati needs to upgrade multiple spots on defense. Delane is a physical corner who plays well in press coverage. He was consistent in coverage throughout his college career.

11. Miami Dolphins – WR Makai Lemon, USC

Someone has to catch passes in Miami after the rebuilding DolphinsreleasedTyreek Hill andtradedJaylen Waddle. Lemon has sure hands and produces. The 5-foot-11 WR is best suited in the slot in the NFL.

12. Dallas Cowboys – CB Jermod McCoy, Tennessee

Dallas finished 2025 with the NFL’s worst pass defense. The Cowboys’ inability to get after the QB and shortcomings at cornerback both played a role in the team’s poor pass defense. Many believe McCoy would’ve been the best corner in this year’s draft before a torn ACL cost him the entire 2025 season.

13. Los Angeles Rams – OT Francis Mauigoa, Miami

There’s certainly a possibility Mauigoa gets drafted within the top 10. But if he’s available at No. 13, it’s hard to believe the Rams pass on him. Mauigoa can start right away at right tackle. He’s the top tackle in this year’s draft.

14. Baltimore Ravens – OG Olaivavega Ioane, Penn State

The Ravens must beef up their interior, especially after losing center Tyler Linderbaum. Ioane is the top-rated guard in this year’s draft. He’s a tough mauler of a guard who can help pave the way for more rushing lanes for Derrick Henry.

15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Edge Akheem Mesidor, Miami

Tampa Bay has needed more pass rush juice for a while. Mesidor is a physical edge rusher who plays with a high motor. The Bucs saw what Mesidor can do as an edge rusher right down the road in the Sunshine State.

16. Trade: New York Jets trade pick to Carolina Panthers – TE Kenyon Sadiq, Oregon

With Sadiq slipping a little bit, the Panthers trade up to select the top tight end in the draft. The Panthers need more firepower on offense – Carolina didn’t have a tight end produce more than 30 catches in 2025 – and Sadiq can line up all over the field. He’s athletic and can keep the chains moving. The rebuilding Jets get additional draft capital in exchange to add to their nine total draft picks.

17. Detroit Lions – OL Spencer Fano, Utah

Fano seems like a quintessential Lions pick. The Utah product is the top offensive linemen available and has position flexibility. He can play guard or tackle. Detroit’s O-line ranked 31stin pass block win rate last year, perESPN.

18. Minnesota Vikings – S Dillon Thieneman, Oregon

Replacing long-time veteran Harrison Smith with Thieneman would be a seamless transition. Thieneman is a center fielder at safety with good speed and size.

19. Trade: Carolina Panthers trade pick to New York Jets – CB Avieon Terrell, Clemson

With multiple needs on both sides of the football, it makes sense for the Jets to trade down in an attempt to gain more assets. The Jets don’t have an adequate replacement afterthey shippedCB Sauce Gardner to Indy. Terrell is a smart instinctive cornerback with good football bloodlines. His brother, A.J., is the Falcons’ top cornerback. Opposing QBs had a league best 110.9 passer rating versus the Jets defense.

20. Dallas Cowboys – S Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, Toledo

McNeil-Warren can line up close to the line of scrimmage or play center fielder in Dallas’ defensive backfield. The Cowboys have an opportunity to help their poorest secondary in a big way in the first round.

21. Pittsburgh Steelers – OT Monroe Freeling, Georgia

Freeling has good length and athletic ability at tackle. OT Broderick Jones suffered a season-ending neck injury last season and hasn’t proved to be the long-term solution at the position.

22. Trade: Los Angeles Chargers trade pick to Cleveland Browns – OT Caleb Lomu, Utah

The Browns move up as the top tackles continue to come off the board. The Browns have revamped their offensive line this offseason, and the Lomu addition continues those efforts. The Chargers are prime candidates to trade down because they own just five total picks in this year's draft. The Chargers could fill a need at edge or guard later in the first or second round.

23. Philadelphia Eagles – OT Blake Miller, Clemson

Standout right tackle Lane Johnson isn’t getting any younger. Miller is a potential replacement. He’s a natural right tackle with impressive fundamentals at the position.

24. Trade: Cleveland Browns trade pick to Los Angeles Chargers – Edge T.J. Parker, Clemson

Clemson players go back-to-back. The Chargerslost Odafe Oweh, who thrived as their third edge rusher, in free agency. Los Angeles needs to find a long-term replacement for Khalil Mack. The Chargers traded a couple picks down and got a player who fills an area of need. Parker is a powerful edge rusher and stout run defender with impressive size.

25. Chicago Bears – Edge Keldric Faulk, Auburn

The Bears have a glaring hole at edge rusher. Chicago ranked 31stin pass rush win rate, perESPN. Faulk is a little raw as a pass rusher, but he has good traits and moves well.

26. Buffalo Bills – WR KC Concepcion, Texas A&M

After acquiring DJ Moorevia trade, the Bills add more firepower to their wide receiver room. Concepcion showed good separation skills in college. He’s at his best in short and intermediate routes.

27. San Francisco 49ers – CB Brandon Cisse, South Carolina

The 49ers could draft an edge rusher here to pair with Nick Bosa, but a cornerback room with Deommodore Lenoir and Cisse is intriguing. The 6-foot corner has the length and athleticism to play outside corner.

28. Houston Texans – OG Chase Bisontis, Texas A&M

Fixing theoffensive line is top priority for the Texansthis offseason. Houston ranked had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL last year. Bisontis can start at guard as a rookie.

29. Kansas City Chiefs – CB Colton Hood, Tennessee

Cornerback is a glaring need for the Chiefs. It’s going to be tough to replace cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, but Hood is a good start. Hood is a polished corner who plays with a physical style.

30. Miami Dolphins – OL Kadyn Proctor, Alabama

Proctor was one of the best tackles in college football last season. The behemoth offensive lineman is a bulldozer. There’s also talk that he could slide inside and play guard.

31. New England Patriots – WR Omar Cooper Jr., Indiana

The Patriots would love to see a player like Cooper fall to them. Cooper was Fernando Mendoza’s top target at Indiana last season. Cooper can play outside or inside. His ability to make catches in traffic is impressive.

32. Seattle Seahawks – RB Jadarian Price, Notre Dame

Price is a smooth runner with good instincts and vision. He made a name for himself in his own right playing with Notre Dame teammate Jeremiyah Love. The Seahawks lostSuper Bowl 60 MVPKenneth Walker III in free agency and Zach Charbonnet is recovering from a knee injury.

Reynaldo Lopez and Jorge Soler throw punches in wild Braves-Angels brawl

Unlike many confrontations described as brawls in MLB, hands were thrown in Tuesday’s game between the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels.

Yahoo Sports

A fight broke out in the fifth inning between Braves pitcher Reynaldo López and Angels designated hitter Jorge Soler, triggering a full clearing of the benches and bullpens. Tension had been brewing throughout the game, with Soler hitting a two-run homer in the first inning then getting hit by a 96 mph fastball in the third.

Tensions boiled over when López threw a high fastball during Soler’s third plate appearance. The pitch was errant enough it gave the Angels a free stolen base, while Soler made a point of staring down López during the play.

The former teammates were soon going after each other, with Soler eventually getting wrestled to the ground by some members of the Braves. Meanwhile, Angels star Mike Trout pushed López out of the action.

Both combatants were ejected from the game.

Another angle, showing how the staredown turned into fisticuffs:

There is a degree of familiarity on both sides, as López used to play for the Angels and Soler used to play for the Braves. There was also familiarity in the sense that Soler’s homer was his fifth off López, his most against any pitcher in his MLB career.

Fantasy Football 101: When ADP Matters and Where It Misleads

Average draft position, usually shortened to ADP, is one of the most commonfantasy footballdraft tools. It tells managers where players tend to get selected across many drafts. That makes it useful, but only if it is used for the right reasons.

Athlon Sports

ADP is not a rankings list. It is not a projection. It is a record of draft tendencies -- how fantasy owners perceive value -- and how the data is curated can create wild swings in the results. Those distinctions matter. A player’s ADP shows what other managers are willing to pay, not what you are required to invest.

What ADP Actually Means

If a wide receiver has an ADP of 24, that usually means he is coming off the board approximately at the end of the second round in a 12-team league. If a quarterback has an ADP of 78, that places him somewhere in the middle rounds.

The "value slotting" of that information is simple and can help managers understand cost relative to what others believe. Knowing cost helps with timing. You can get a better sense of when a player may no longer be available, which positions are drying up, and whether you can wait another round before making a pick.

Why ADP Matters

Drafts are not just about identifying good players. They are also about understanding when players need to be selected. That is where ADP helps most. It can give conceptual structure to the board, especially for novice managers or early in the draft season.

A manager may love a certain running back, but if the RB's ADP sits several rounds later, reaching too early can cost value. On the other hand, if a player you like keeps going earlier than expected, waiting too long can mean missing him every time.

ADP also helps managers prepare for position runs. If several tight ends or quarterbacks tend to go in the same draft range, that tells you where the board may tighten.

In that sense, ADP helps managers draft with awareness rather than guesswork.

Where ADP Misleads Managers

The mistake comes when managers treat ADP like a strict draft order.

ADP reflects consensus, and consensus is not always correct. Every season, some players get drafted too early because of hype, recent headlines, or name value. Others fall too far because of age, injury concerns, or uncertainty that the market may be overstating.

A sharp drafter does not ignore ADP but does not worship it, either. If you believe a player is undervalued, taking him ahead of ADP can be reasonable -- though savvy gamers will gamble on said player falling past their placement in certain cases. Conversely, if you think a player is overpriced, passing on him is fine even if the pick matches the market. The point of ADP is to provide context, not to make the decision for you.

Another way ADP can lead managers astray is when the source data isn't representative of your league structure. For example, if you're drafting in the last week of August and the ADP provider uses data that includes draft trends from May, the numbers won't be as precise. The same problem applies with non-PPR data for PPR leagues, keeper data being used in redraft formats, two-QB leagues in single-starter formats, etc.

Overly generic ADP figures can lead gamers down a deceptive path, and it's ideal to find a service that allows you to narrowly filter customized data with enough entries to justifiably form a trend.

How to Use ADP the Right Way

Use ADP to understand the room. Use your rankings to make the pick. That is the clearest way to think about it.

ADP helps you judge cost, anticipate when a tier may disappear or a positional run tends to start, and decide whether you should act in a specific manner. Your own evaluation should decide whether the player is worth taking.

It works especially well as a tiebreaker. If two players are fairly close in value, ADP can help you decide which one may still be available later. That can help you squeeze more value out of each round as well as plan accordingly if you're drafting from the turn.

ADP is a draft tool, not a replacement for doing the work of building well-reasoned rankings.

Stellantis in advanced talks to develop Opel EV with China's Leapmotor, sources say

SHANGHAI/MILAN, April 8 (Reuters) - Stellantis is in advanced talks with Leapmotor to jointly develop an Opel-branded electric SUV that would use the Chinese automaker's technology and be produced at Stellantis' Zaragoza plant in Spain, three sources told Reuters.

Reuters

The deal, if finalised, would ‌help Stellantis cut the cost and time to develop a new EV model, as the French-Italian automaker shifts focus to petrol-electric hybrid ‌cars. Earlier this year it announced a $25 billion writedown related to scaling back its EV plans.

It is also seeking to fend off competition from BYD and other Chinese brands in Europe and improve the utilisation rate at its European plants. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, who took the top job in June last year, will present a new long-term business plan on May 21.

Stellantis formed a partnership with Leapmotor after acquiring around a fifth of the Chinese company in 2023. They also have a joint venture, Leapmotor International, that is in charge of the sales and production of Leapmotor cars outside China.

The new model would share a common architecture with the Chinese ‌automaker's B10 compact SUV, which will also be assembled later this year for the European market at the Zaragoza plant, two of the sources said.

Production of the new Opel model is expected to start in 2028 with a targeted annual output of 50,000 vehicles, said the two people.

Under the terms being discussed, Leapmotor would supply key technologies and components including electronic and electrical parts, while Opel would design the exterior, one of the sources said, adding that a significant portion of the vehicle's development would take place in China.

Talks between Stellantis and Leapmotor over the Opel project, codenamed O3U, started in late 2025 and an agreement could be reached as early as this month, the person said.

Details of the advanced talks between Stellantis and Leapmotor over the Opel SUV ‌development have not been previously reported.

In a statement, Stellantis said there was "regular engagement" between the two partners about ways to expand collaboration, but declined to comment further.

Leapmotor told Reuters it is in talks with partners, including Stellantis, but solely on supplying self-developed components with no plans for platform-level collaboration. The Chinese automaker did not respond to requests to comment on details of the Opel EV plans, including the production timeline and targeted output.

Last month, Leapmotor said it expected mass production of its vehicles from Spain from October, with some projects with Stellantis being in "advanced negotiation stages".

EARLY TALKS ON OTHER JOINT PROJECTS

A third ‌person said Stellantis has been studying using Leapmotor's EV technologies for developing the next-generation Opel Mokka B SUV. Production of that model is expected to eventually be moved to Spain from France, this person said.

Opel vehicles made up around 21% of Stellantis' 2025 sales in Europe, the brand's primary market, with Germany as its single largest country.

Stellantis has also started ‌preliminary talks with Leapmotor on the potential development of an Alfa Romeo model using the same architecture at the Zaragoza plant to optimise its capacity, one of the sources said.

Although Stellantis took a big hit on EVs, saying it overestimated the pace of the energy transition, EVs remain part of its strategy, especially in Europe.

The potential Opel EV is only the most advanced of several ongoing discussions between the two automakers. They ‌have also held talks on additional models developed on Leapmotor's architecture for smaller A-segment cars, which would require a different production line from that used in Zaragoza, one of the people said.
