Wood alsotook away a potential homerfrom Nolan Gorman with a leaping catch near the right-field corner in the fourth.

Washington righty Zack Littell struck out six and allowed four hits and one run in five innings. His second-inning strikeout of Nolan Gorman was the 500th of his nine-year career.

UCLA dominates South Carolina for first NCAA women's hoops title

PHOENIX -- Gabriela Jaquez and Lauren Betts led UCLA to its first national championship in the NCAA era with a dominating 79-51 romp over South Carolina on Sunday, the third-largest margin of victory in title game history.

Field Level Media

The Bruins saw it coming.

"I really did expect us to win today," UCLA coach Cori Close said. "I felt very peaceful all day. It wasn't about whether we got the ‘W' or not. I wanted us to be able to play our best when our best was needed, and we delivered on that."

Jaquez had 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and Lauren Betts added 14 points and 11 assists -- her 15th double-double of the season -- as the Bruins (37-1) went wire-to-wire to end the season on a 31-game winning streak.

"Since the roster was made, we just knew we had the tools," said Jaquez, one of five senior starters. "It was just about staying focused and working hard to be the versions of ourselves. That led us to this moment."

Betts, a 6-foot-7 senior, was named the Most Outstanding Player, but on the stat sheet took back seat to Jaquez, whose extended family -- including brother Jaime Jr. of the Miami Heat, a former UCLA star -- attended the game.

"Of course I have bragging rights," Gabriela said.

Jaquez's fastback layup gave the balanced Bruins a 48-26 lead midway through the third quarter, and 3-pointers from Jaquez and Gianna Kneepkens keyed a 13-0 run to propel them to a 61-32 lead after three.

"Hard matchup," Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley said of Jaquez. "You come into a game, you know exactly what she's going to do and she does it. She's relentless."

Tessa Johnson scored 14 points and Agot Makeer put up 11 for the Gamecocks (36-4), who were never closer than 28 in the fourth quarter.

With Betts an imposing presence in the middle, the Bruins limited South Carolina to 29% shooting from the field and had a 49-37 rebounding edge. They held Texas to 30.8% in a 51-44 semifinal victory, when Longhorns' leading scorer Madison Booker had six points on 3-of-23 shooting.

The Bruins led 13-4, 21-10 and 30-15. They took a 36-23 halftime edge and kept building.

"We just didn't have it today," said Staley, who was attempting to become the fourth coach in NCAA history with four women's titles. "They were the better team today. "Obviously we got smacked today. We got to figure out how we smack back."

All five UCLA senior starters scored in double figures. Kneepkens had 15 points, Charlisse Leger-Walker had 10 points and Kiki Rice added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Rice joined Jaquez and South Carolina's Johnson and Taniya Latson on the all-Final Four team.

The Bruins trailed just once, 2-0 to Texas, in either Final Four game. It was UCLA's second-straight Final Four appearance, a program first. The Bruins won the 1978 national AIAW championship. The NCAA era began in 1982.

The Gamecocks were playing in their third straight national championship game and their fourth in five seasons. They beat Iowa in 2024 and lost to UConn last season. UCLA was on the other side of a blowout in the Final Four last season, failing 85-51 to eventual champion UConn in the semifinals.

"I just never wanted to feel that way ever again," Betts said. "I feel like ever since then we've really just grown in our preparation. When duty called, everyone answered, so I'm just really proud of this group."

South Korea says 'credible intelligence' indicates North Korean leader's daughter is successor

Performance commemorating International Women's Day in Pyongyang

SEOUL, April 6 (Reuters) - South Korea's spy agency now believes North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's teenage daughter has been positioned as his successor, lawmakers ‌said on Monday, citing a recent public display of her driving a tank that ‌was likely intended to dispel any doubts.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) told lawmakers its assessment was not based on circumstantial inference but on what it described as "credible intelligence" collected by the agency, according to briefings by ruling and opposition party members after a closed-door parliamentary meeting.

The NIS said the imagery of the daughter driving a tank was intended to highlight her supposed military aptitude and dispel doubts over a female heir, ‌lawmakers said.

North Korea's state‑run media KCNA last month published photos of Kim and his daughter driving a new tank, following earlier images showing her firing a rifle at a shooting range and using a handgun.

Such scenes are intended to pay "homage" to Kim's own public military appearances during the early 2010s when he was being prepared to succeed his own father, ruling Democratic Party lawmaker Park Sun-won said.

The latest assessment of Kim's daughter, who is believed to be around 13 and to be ‌named Ju Ae, is a progression from earlier analysis by the spy agency which said she was likely being groomed to succeed her father.

Ju Ae's repeated presence at defence‑related events is aimed at easing doubts over a female successor and accelerating the construction of a succession narrative, the lawmakers said, citing the NIS.

Lawmakers have previously said the agency believes her increasingly prominent role suggests she ‌is already being treated as the de facto second‑highest figure in the North’s leadership.

People Power Party lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun said the NIS noted that suggestions Kim's younger sister Kim Yo Jong might be unhappy about the focus ‌on Ju Ae were misplaced, as Kim Yo Jong does not hold independent power.

Some North Korea experts, however, urged caution in interpreting the images as definitive succession signals.

Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said Ju Ae's tank appearance alone was insufficient to ‌conclude she had been confirmed as Kim's heir, noting she appeared alongside her father rather than independently, unlike Kim Jong Un's own solo military appearances during his grooming phase.

Iran, U.S. receive plan to end hostilities, immediate ceasefire; source says

April 6 (Reuters) - Iran and the United States have received a plan to end hostilities that could come into effect on Monday and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a source aware ‌of the proposals said on Monday.

Reuters

A framework to end hostilities has been put together by Pakistan ‌and exchanged with Iran and the U.S. overnight, the source said, outlining a two-tier approach with an immediate ceasefire followed by a comprehensive agreement.

"All elements need to be agreed today," the source said, adding the initial understanding would be structured as a memorandum of understanding finalised electronically through Pakistan, the sole communication channel in the talks.

Axios first reported on Sunday that the United States, Iran and regional mediators were discussing a potential 45-day ceasefire as part of a two-phase deal that ‌could lead to a permanent end to the war, citing U.S., Israeli and regional sources.

The source told Reuters Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has been in contact "all night long" with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

Under the proposal, a ceasefire would take effect immediately, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with 15–20 days to finalise a broader settlement. The deal, tentatively dubbed the "Islamabad Accord," would include a regional framework for the strait, with final in-person talks in Islamabad.

There was no immediate response from U.S. ‌and Iranian officials. Pakistan's foreign office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi declined comment.

Iranian officials have previously told Reuters that Tehran was seeking a permanent ceasefire with guarantees they will not be attacked again by the U.S. and Israel. They have said Iran has received messages from mediators including Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt.

The final agreement is expected to include Iranian commitments not to pursue nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets, the ‌source said.

Two Pakistani sources said Iran has yet to commit despite intensified civilian and military outreach.

"Iran has not responded yet," one source said, adding proposals backed by Pakistan, China and the United States for a temporary ceasefire have drawn no commitment so far.

There ‌was no immediate response from Chinese officials to requests for comment.

The latest diplomatic push comes amid escalating hostilities that have raised concerns over disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil supplies.

U.S. President Donald Trump has in recent days publicly pressed for a rapid end to the ‌conflict, warning of consequences if a ceasefire is not reached within a short timeframe.

The conflict has heightened volatility in energy markets, with traders closely watching any developments that could affect flows through the strait.

WASHINGTON/CAIRO, April 6 (Reuters) - The United States and Iran have received the framework of a plan to end hostilities, a day after ‌President Donald Trump threatened to rain "hell" on Tehran if it did ‌not make a deal, although Iran said it would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz as part of a temporary ceasefire.

In a post laden with expletives on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump threatened further strikes on Iranian energy and transport infrastructure if Iran failed to make a deal and ‌reopen the Strait by Tuesday.

Fresh aerial strikes were reported across the region on Monday, more than five weeks since the U.S. and Israel began pounding Iran in a war that ‌has killed thousands and damaged economies by boosting oil prices.

Iran responded to the attacks by effectively closing the Hormuz waterway, a conduit for about a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas supply, and attacking Israel, ‌U.S. military bases and energy infrastructure around the Gulf.

Frenchman executed by China for drug trafficking

A French citizen convicted of drug trafficking has beenexecutedin China after being kept on death row for more than 15 years.

The Telegraph Chan Thao Phoumy

Chan Thao Phoumy, 62, was executed in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, despite French authorities' clemency appeals, the French foreign ministry said.

Chan, born in Guangzhou but later a naturalised ‌French citizen, was one of 89 suspects arrested in 2005 for drug trafficking before being jailed for life in 2007.

He was handed the death penalty in 2010 by a court in his home town for his role in a 100 million yuan (£11m) ‌drug operation that made, transported and dealt crystal methamphetamine in China.

China's threshold for the death penalty is 50g (1.8oz) of heroin or methamphetamine.

The ministry's statement expressed "consternation" and added: "We particularly regret that Mr Chan's defence did not have access to the final court hearing, which constitutes a violation of his rights."

"We extend our condolences to his family, whose grief we share," it said.

In a short statement that did not mention Chan by name, the Chinese embassy in Paris said that China "treats defendants of all nationalities equally, handles all cases impartially and strictly in accordance with the law".

France abolished the death penalty in 1981, and has become a vigorous campaigner against its use and for its abolition everywhere.

China's use of executions – carried out by firing squads or lethal injections – is shrouded in secrecy but has long been extensive. Amnesty International says China is the world's leading executioner, believed to sentence and put to death thousands of people annually.

In December, Chinaexecuted a former senior bankerfor accepting £116m in bribes in a corruption purge by Xi Jinping, the president.

Bai Tianhui, the former general manager of the asset management firm China Huarong International Holdings, was killed in the northern city of Tianjin.

According to prosecutors, Bai abused his position in the state-owned offshore investment company between 2014 and 2018, having accepted a "huge amount" of bribes totalling 1.1 billion yuan.
