MET Eireann has predicted that showers are set to make their return this week after days of sunny conditions.

The last number of days has seen the weather give Irish people a glimpse into what they hope the summer will look like – but it is set to be short lived.

Rain will set in as the weekend hits

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said: "Another fine day for most with good sunny spells. Some cloud in the East and actually small chance of a shower in the East this afternoon but localized and small.

"Good news is tomorrow Wednesday will be another good day with nice sunny spells for most areas. Feeling cool in the shade though with the breeze and lower temperatures.

"Rain pushing in from the West Thursday but uncertain how far East it will make it with heaviest in Southwest."

Met Eireann is predicting similar conditions despite Wednesday looking clear and dry for the majority of the day.

Rain and drizzle are set to return for a brief stint towards the end of the week with a much wetter weekend on the horizon.

Wednesday will be a dry day for the most with a mix of sun and cloud, with the exception of a few light showers developing.

Temperatures are set to be between 10 to 15 degrees and drop tonight to lows of 2 to 6 degrees.

Tonight will be a much chillier one but generally dry under broken cloud with just a few showers across the North and Northwest.

Ulster will be mostly dry despite a few light showers which are said to be isolated, similar to the conditions set to hit Connacht.

Munster will see a mix of sunshine and cloud with no showers on the horizon, which matches up to the conditions in Leinster.

For Thursday, Met Eireann said: "Scattered showers in the North and Northwest early on Thursday with a few sunny spells elsewhere.

"Becoming cloudier everywhere through the day with some showery outbreaks of rain developing."

Friday will see a bit of a turn nationwide as bright and sunny spells may peep through the overall cloud and scattered showers.

The showers on Friday will "die away" overnight, with frost setting in and temperatures dropping to as low as -1 degrees.

As for the weekend, there is a likelihood of more rain hitting Irish shores.

Met Eireann said: "Current indications suggest both days with bring a mix of sunny spells and scattered April showers with the likelihood of more general falls of rain moving in off the Atlantic on Sunday.

"Much of the South and Southeast may stay fully dry however.

"Fairly cool with highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees. Northerly winds will likely veer westerly."
