Ryan Crouser won his third consecutive world championship in the men's shot put on Saturday in Tokyo. That follows up the third straight gold medal he won at the 2024 Paris Olympics, when he became the first man to achieve that feat.

With the win, Crouser joined Switzerland's Werner Günthör as the second man to win three straight shot put titles. He won gold with a throw of 22.34 meters (73 feet, 3 1/2 inches). Mexico's Uziel Muñoz won silver with a throw of 21.97 meters and Italy's Leonardo Fabbri earned bronze.

Crouser, 32, took a difficult path to his third straight gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. He has been struggling with an elbow injury and had not competed in a national or global event previously in 2025. Though he participated in the new World Shot Put Series at Drake University in April, Crouser hadn't participated in a traditional competition since last September.

All six of Crouser's official shot put throws this year were made on Saturday. He had one throw in qualifying and another five in the finals.

"[The elbow] is on the road to recovery. It held up decently tonight," Crouser told NBC Sports. It's going to be sore tomorrow... Not perfect technically, not in great physical shape, but managed to scrap out a win."

The exact injury Crouser had fought through is a nerve entrapment in his elbow, according to the . An MRI showed arthritis, bone spurs and a compromised joint capsule in the elbow. Contrast fluid used in the exam leaked out to his forearm, demonstrating how much damage had been sustained. The injury was treated with platelet-rich plasma injections.

The United States also won gold in the mixed 4x400 meter relay on Saturday, defending their world championship earned two years ago in Budapest.

The team of Bryce Deadmon, Lynna-Irby Jackson, Jenoah McKiver and Alexis Holmes finished with a time of 3:08.80 in winning the title over the defending Olympic gold medalist Netherlands, anchored by Femke Bol.

The Dutch team finished at 3:09.96, while Belgium won bronze at 3:10.61.
