Seeing a serial killer in his birthday suit can go a long way.

Laurie Metcalf reflected on how a key nude scene from *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* helped her unlock her character's dynamic with Charlie Hunnam's titular murderer.

Metcalf, who portrays Ed Gein's mother in the Netflix series, discussed with *Variety* the importance of filming a scene in which Hunnam's character stands in front of her completely naked as she scolds him.

"I'm sitting in that chair looking at a grown man, but I'm lecturing him like he was seven years old," the actress said. "I'm not seeing him as a grown man, but seeing him still under my care and under my sick supervision. It's a mother-son teaching experience. It's simplistic, but warped. But mentally, it was helpful to see him like that."

How the real 'Monster' met his end: Inside Ed Gein's arrest and death

Serial killer Ed Gein is escorted from the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory to the county jail after confessing to two murders.

The series — which is the third in the *Monster* franchise after buzzy installments about Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers — highlights how Gein's mother impacted his psychology. Metcalf, however, believes that her character is only partially to blame for the serial killer's actions. "It's nature versus nurture, right?" Metcalf said. "I think it's both cases for him."

Metcalf said that director Max Winkler, who helmed six of the miniseries' eight episodes, helped cultivate an upbeat environment on set.

"Despite the subject matter and the tone of the series, the shooting space was really fun," the actress explained. "It's hard to picture that sort of work being fun, but it was because it was very collaborative."

The *Lady Bird* star noted that Winkler, who is the son of Henry Winkler, allowed space for improvisation and unexpected creative choices as he shot the show. "Max is so open to accidents that might happen in the scene. He would feed me things in between takes that we could do. Some he used, some he didn't. I really liked working that way. The job itself was a wonderful set to be on, despite how dark it is."

*Monster: The Ed Gein Story* is streaming on Netflix.
