A strange week for Tommy Fleetwood is offering an exciting possibility. Despite wrestling with his swing through three rounds at Le Golf National he is firmly in the fight for an Olympic gold medal. After carding a 69, the Englishman will embark on his final loop on Sunday just a stroke off the 14-under-par lead jointly held by Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele, the defending champion. As ever the question will concern his ability to close out a tournament, but on the course where he won the French Open in 2017 and excelled in the Ryder Cup a year later, his familiarity with the surroundings is compensating for discomfort with his game.

Adam Peaty will not be involved in the mixed medley relay final at the Olympics on Saturday night. Peaty returned to the pool this morning but has not been selected. The 29-year-old admitted that he has been struggling physically after testing positive for Covid-19 on Monday. Former Team GB swimmer Mark Foster said on BBC Sport: 'I can only guess [Adam Peaty's non-selection] that's down to the fact that after a couple of days of covid he's not felt that up to it.

The Australian coach of the women's triathlon silver medallist has been outed as the second known child sex offender participating at the Olympics. Brett Sutton, 65, trained Switzerland's Julie Derron to second place last week, ahead of Team GB's Beth Potter. He was given accreditation by China and was at the event, where he gave an interview to Swiss television close to the finish line on Pont Alexandre III. On subsequent footage, Sutton's official Olympic accreditation lanyard could be seen around his neck.
