FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Thomas Edison and Henry Ford are famous for their innovations in electricity generation and automobiles respectively, but they were also at the forefront of a massively popular trend in Florida: Rich people from up north spending the cold winter months in the Sunshine State.

Edison first visited Fort Myers in 1885 after a doctor suggested spending time in Florida's warmer climate for health reasons, and he built a house along the Caloosahatchee River the next year. Ford made many visits to southwest Florida to see Edison and purchased the property next door in 1916.

Southwest Florida became their vacation spot, Edison and Ford Winter Estates marketing director Lisa Wilson said. Edison spent most of the year in New Jersey, while Ford lived in Michigan.

"They came down here to escape the cold like many snowbirds do today. But they worked when they were here, so it wasn't just vacation time," Wilson said.

Before spring breakers

Fort Myers was basically a group of farmers living in an abandoned military fort, using tallow lamps for light, when Edison first visited, Edison and Ford Winter Estates historian Isaac Hunter said.

"The following year after he built his home, he had a generator installed across the street," Hunter said. "There were about 350 residents, almost all of them came over to the property to watch the lights get turned on."

While Edison never powered the rest of the city, his illuminated home gave neighbors an appetite for electricity, Hunter said. About a decade later, a local business man bought a generator for his canning plant and eventually develop a rudimentary grid to power the city.

Edison's first connection to Ford came in 1891, when Ford was working as an engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit, Hunter said. The job involved no direct contact with Edison, but they eventually met at a meeting in 1896. Ford left the company to further develop his automobile designs, but his admiration for Edison continued.

"Henry Ford was a huge fan of Thomas Edison, and as he started to work on automobiles and become a bigger, bigger name in the world, he continued to contact Thomas Edison, write letters, ask him advice," Hunter said.

They became friends in 1914, when Edison invited Ford and his family to Fort Myers.

Friends and neighbors

As Edison, Ford and another visitor, naturalist John Burroughs, were getting acquainted in southwest Florida, they decided to go on a camping trip, setting off into the Everglades in a parade of Ford's Model Ts.

"There weren't roads. The Tamiami Trail, Alligator Alley did not exist in 1914," Hunter said. "So they're driving through Florida wilderness. They got about halfway out. Marshland, forest, they were miserable."

They finished their camping trip at Edison's estate. The trip may not have been a complete success, but it began a decade-long tradition of trips throughout the U.S. and led to Ford buying the property next door to Edison in 1916.

Harvey Firestone, founder of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, later joined Edison, Ford and Burroughs, and the quartet became known as the Vagabonds. The trips gave the industrialists a chance to discuss business and eventually reach the conclusion that the U.S. needed its own source of rubber.

Where the rubber meets the road

Besides the obvious use of rubber in tires, it was used in practically all industrial manufacturing.

"All of these gentlemen, they used rubber every single day," Hunter said.

The U.S. at the time had been purchasing latex and other botanical rubber supplies from overseas, but the disruption of that supply caused by World War I demonstrated how important it was for the U.S. to have its own source. And since rubber was made out of plants, Edison, Ford and Firestone concluded that southwest Florida would be an ideal place to grow and test many different plants.

They opened the Edison Botanical Research Laboratory in 1927 and tested over 17,000 different samples of rubber plants, Hunter said.

Edison eventually settled on goldenrod as the best natural source of latex. He envisioned farmers planting and harvesting the crop, but this never happened. Edison passed away in 1931, and the the lab shut down a few years later, around the time a petroleum-based synthetic rubber was developed, Hunter said.

"This process, especially in the 30s, was cheaper, faster, and it really took up the rubber production of the United States," Hunter said.

A lasting legacy

Edison's widow deeded his Florida property to the city of Fort Myers for public use in 1947 for $1, and it was opened for tours a short time later.

The neighboring Ford property was sold and occupied as a private residence for several decades until the city bought it in 1988. A nonprofit organization took over administration of the entire property in 2003 and oversaw a $14 million restoration project.

"Thomas Edison and Henry Ford really put this city on the map, and today it's an international tourist destination," Wilson said.

Visitors can explore a museum featuring some of Edison's 1,093 patents, including the phonograph and the incandescent light bulb, along with the research lab and gardens.

(Reuters) -The Trump administration on Friday widened the reach of its 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports by adding hundreds of derivative products to the list of goods subject to the levies.

In a Federal Register notice late on Friday, the Commerce Department said the Bureau of Industry and Security was adding 407 product codes to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States that identify the goods to be hit with the additional duties on the steel and aluminum content of those products.

The non-steel and non-aluminum content will be subject to the tariff rates President Donald Trump has imposed on the goods originating from specific countries, the notice said.

The levies on the goods on the expanded list go into effect on August 18.

Earlier on Friday, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he headed to a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska that he planned additional announcements on steel tariffs and on levies for semiconductor imports.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered and Luis Gil pitched one-run ball over 5 1/3 innings to help the New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Friday night.

Gil (1-1) allowed one run on four hits and three walks and had four strikeouts in his third start of the season. David Bednar pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save of the season and second for the Yankees.

Andre Pallante (6-10) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks and struck out a season-high eight batters in five innings for the Cardinals, who have lost three straight games.

Victor Scott II hit an RBI double down the right field line off Camilo Doval, and Pedro Pagés scored on a wild pitch from Luke Weaver in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Yankees' lead to 4-3.

Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn hit back-to-back doubles to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard and chase Gil from the game.

Jason DomĂnguez lined a two-out RBI single to left field in the top of the third inning to put the Yankees ahead 4-0.

Chisholm lined a two-out, two-run homer, his 21st of the season, down the right field line to cap off a three-run first inning for the Yankees.

Key moment

Yankees first baseman Paul Goldschmidt entered the game as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the eighth inning in his first appearance at Busch Stadium since playing for the Cardinals from 2019-2024. Goldschmidt has been dealing with a mild right knee sprain suffered in Tuesday night's 9-1 loss to Minnesota.

Key stat

Judge has reached base safely in 98 of his 112 games played this season. He went 0 for 4, but drew a walk off Matt Svanson in the ninth inning.

Up next

Yankees LHP Max Fried (12-5, 2.94 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Cardinals RHP Sonny Gray (11-5, 4.06) Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Charlie Morton gave up two hits and struck out five over six innings and the Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the first inning of a 7-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.

Dillon Dingler hit a two-run single in the first, in which the Tigers batted around against Twins starter Pierson Ohl (0-3), who was making his fifth career start. An error by Minnesota second baseman Luke Keaschall led to four unearned runs.

The was enough for 41-year-old right-hander Morton (8-10), who bounced back after a rough start against the Angels his last time out.

Ohl, who faced Detroit earlier this month, lasted only 2 1/3 innings. Four of the seven total runs he surrendered were unearned.

Dingler drove in his third run of the game with a double in the third. Javier Báez also drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who are leading the AL Central. Spencer Torkelson reached base three times and scored twice for Detroit.

The start of Friday's game was delayed 26 minutes due to rain.

Key moment

Keaschall reached base three times, but his error in the first inning helped open the floodgates for the Tigers. It was the second error of his young 17-game MLB career.

Key stat

Friday was Morton's second start of the year in which he did not allow a run. He also put up a zero in a five-inning start against Baltimore in June.

Up next

RHP Casey Mize (11-4, 3.50 ERA) starts the third game of the series for the Tigers and looks to win his third straight outing. The Twins counter with RHP Zebby Matthews (3-4, 5.11), who beat Detroit in his prior start against the Tigers this season.

Goodman hit his 25th homer — a solo shot off Brandon Pfaadt (12-8) in the first to put the Rockies in front.

Tanner Gordon (3-5) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings for the victory. He gave up 10 runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 13-6 loss to Pfaadt and the Diamondbacks in Phoenix his last time out.

Jimmy Herget fanned four in two innings, and Juan Mejia struck out two in the eighth to set up Vodnik's fifth save.

Tyler Freeman tripled for Colorado leading off the fifth and scored on Jordan Beck's two-out double.

Ketel Marte singled leading off the Arizona sixth and Corbin Carroll followed with a four-pitch walk to end Gordon's day. McCarthy singled off Herget to get the Diamondbacks within a run.

Key moment

Doyle threw out Lourdes Gurriel Jr. at third trying to advance on McCarthy's hit in the sixth before Herget struck out Locklear on a foul tip to keep it 4-3.

Cal Raleigh let his bat say a lot on MLB Players' Weekend, carrying a stick that said "Big butt... bigger bombs" written on it.

Then the All-Star catcher swung that bat and continued what's been a dream season for the Seattle Mariners' slugger. Raleigh hit his 46th home run of the season off the New York Mets' Sean Manaea, a two-run shot in the third inning that put Seattle on top, 4-3.

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

Driving in two runs with the homer also gave Raleigh 100 RBI for the season. That matched his career-high, set last season, and also made Raleigh the first catcher since Mike Piazza in 1999 and 2000 with 100 RBI in consecutive seasons while playing at least 50% of his games behind the plate. (Piazza did it in five consecutive seasons from 1996-2000.)

Cal Raleigh blasts home run No. 46 and is the first player in Major League Baseball to reach the 100 RBI mark 🤯 pic.twitter.com/efCLkkl1kx

— MLB (@MLB) August 15, 2025

Raleigh is the first American League hitter to reach 100 RBI this season and only trails the Philadelphia Phillies' Kyle Schwarber, who has 101 after his three-run homer on Friday versus the Washington Nationals. (Raleigh actually got to 100 RBI first before Schwarber overtook him.)

However, it's Raleigh's home run total that media and fans will keep their eyes on through the final six weeks of the season. With homer No. 46, he leapfrogged Johnny Bench into second place for most home runs by a catcher in a single season. He's now two away from tying Salvador Perez's single-season record with 48 homers, set in 2021 with the Kansas City Royals.

And if you don't know by now what the "big butt" on his Players' Weekend bat refers to, it's the reason for his nickname, "The Big Dumper." Former teammate Jarred Kelenic tagged him with that for his large backside and ability to hit clutch home runs.

"Big butt... even BIGGER BOMBS!"Cal Raleigh may have won Players' Weekend with this inscription on his bat 🍑 pic.twitter.com/6sUq0lOJVX

— MLB (@MLB) August 15, 2025

Raleigh is also moving up the all-time list for most home runs in a single season by a switch-hitter. His 46th homer moved him ahead of Lance Berkman and Chipper Jones for the third-highest total in a season. Only Mickey Mantle — who hit 52 homers in 1956 and 54 in 1961 — is ahead of him now.

Additionally, Raleigh tied Mantle by hitting 46 home runs in his team's first 123 games of the season, according to MLB.com's Sarah Langs. That will be one record Raleigh doesn't set this year.

However, the Mariners have 39 games remaining on their schedule after Friday's 11-9 win over the Mets. He has plenty of opportunity to put himself atop the lists for most home runs by a catcher and by a switch-hitter in a single season. Would anyone dare to bet against him at this point?

Oh, and Seattle is 1.5 games behind the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West and currently hold the league's No. 1 wild-card playoff spot. Raleigh is doing all of this in games that matter, his home runs making maximum impact for the Mariners' fortunes.

NEW YORK (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 46th homer, sparked a five-run seventh inning with his first double in over a month and the Seattle Mariners set a team record with nine doubles to beat the skidding New York Mets 11-9 on Friday night.

Raleigh hit a two-run shot to the second deck in left field and became the first player to reach 100 RBIs this season to give the Mariners a 4-3 lead in the third. He helped the Mariners rally from a 6-5 deficit in the seventh with his first double since June 27 and then doubled again in the eighth.

The comeback helped Seattle overcome two homers by Francisco Lindor. Lindor hit a leadoff homer and then a two-run shot in the fourth for a 5-4 lead. Juan Soto also homered and Francisco Alvarez hit a three-run shot in the eighth but the Mets lost for the 14th time in 16 games.

After Raleigh scored the tying run on a double by Eugenio Suárez off Ryan Helsley (3-4), Dominic Canzone followed with a go-ahead RBI double off Brooks Raley.

Donavan Solano hit an RBI double off the top of the left field wall and rookie Cole Young capped the big inning with a two-run double.

Mitch Garver homered and Julio Rodriguez hit a pair of RBI doubles as the Mariners won for the 10th time in 13 games. Young added an RBI single to get Seattle within one run in the sixth.

Seattle starter Luis Castillo tied a season worst by allowing six runs and nine hits in four innings.

New York starter Sean Manaea allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.

Key moment

After Jackson Kowar allowed Alvarez's homer, Matt Brash retired Lindor to end the eighth and Andrés Muñoz converted his 29th save.

Key stats

Raleigh has matched his career high with his 100th RBI in his 448th at-bat. Last season, he finished with 100 RBIs in 546 at-bats.

Up next
