The US manufacturing sector continued its sluggish year in August.

Data out Tuesday from the Institute for Supply Management showed the ISM's manufacturing PMI came in at 48.7 last month, an increase from the reading of 48 seen in July but below estimates for a reading of 48.9, according to Bloomberg data. Readings of less than 50 on the index indicate a contraction in activity in the sector.

This marked the sixth straight month of contraction in the US manufacturing sector, according to the ISM's reading.

The new orders index within the ISM's report, however, rose to 51.4, indicating expansion, and marked a strong uptick from the 47.1 seen in July. The production index fell to 47.8 in August from 51.4 in July.

"In August, U.S. manufacturing activity contracted at a slightly slower rate, with new orders growth the biggest factor in the 0.7-percentage point gain of the Manufacturing PMI," said Susan Spence, chair of the ISM's survey committee. "However, since production contracted at a rate nearly equal to the expansion in new orders, the Manufacturing PMI increase was nominal."

Respondents to the ISM's survey widely cited tariffs as putting pressure on their planning, sales, and costs.

One contact in the electrical equipment industry told the ISM they've raised prices by 24% so far, but these increases will only offset tariffs, meaning their margins won't actually improve as a result.

"In two rounds of layoffs, we have let go of about 15 percent of our U.S. workforce," this contact said. "These are high-paying and high-skilled roles: engineers, marketing, design teams, finance, IT and operations. The administration wants manufacturing jobs in the U.S., but we are losing higher-skilled and higher-paying roles. With no stability in trade and economics, capital expenditures spending and hiring are frozen. It's survival."

Data from S&P Global published Tuesday morning, however, painted a more positive picture of the sector, with the firm's US manufacturing PMI showing the strongest monthly increase since May 2022.

S&P Global's US manufacturing PMI came in at 53, above the 49.8 seen in July.

This report also showed, however, that tariffs continue to act as a headwind for manufacturing. S&P Global Market Intelligence's chief business economist Chris Williamson said in the report that factory inventories rose on concerns over coming price hikes and potential supply constraints.

"These concerns are being stoked by uncertainty over the impact of tariffs, fears which were underpinned by a further jump in prices paid for inputs by factories, linked overwhelmingly by purchasing managers to these tariffs," Williamson said.

"Cost increases are being passed on to customers via widespread hikes to factory gate prices," Williamson added.

"The big question is the degree to which these price rises will then feed through to higher consumer price inflation in the coming months."

Summer may unofficially be over, but a few fireworks are still poised to pop off on Wall Street.

And they are wasting no time lighting up markets after the Labor Day weekend.

A Federal appeals court ruled Friday against the Trump administration's tariffs. But it left them in place until Oct. 14, allowing the White House time to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

"This tariff saga continues with even more uncertainty, as we now move from speculating on "who, what, when, where, and how" related to tariffs to an even more uncertain "whether," Citi retail analyst Paul Lejuez said.

Here's what else the Opening Bid team is watching.

Around the horn -

Challenging the Trump tariff. How the tariff uncertainty is priced into stocks is now in focus. "If the Supreme Court agrees to review the case, this could leave the tariffs in place until as late as June 2026. Legal uncertainty could lead the Trump administration to shift tariffs to other statutory bases but, however the Supreme Court ultimately rules, the president will retain substantial authority to impose tariffs," Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said.

Positioning for an easier, perhaps less independent Federal Reserve. Gold prices have hit fresh records above $3,500 an ounce. The price has now doubled since the start of 2023. The latest push reflects investors bracing for a steady drumbeat of rate cuts from the Fed, which historically is bullish for gold. Any weakening in the Fed's independence — amid challenges from Trump — is also viewed as bullish for gold.

When the CEO misbehaves. The 2025 string of misbehaving CEOs rages on. Nestlé (NESN.SW) over the weekend booted CEO Laurent Freixe over an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate. The CEO of alcohol giant Suntory Tak Niinami reportedly resigned today as his home was searched for illegal supplements.

Apple gets nibbles. Somewhat under the radar, Apple's (AAPL) stock is rallying into the expected Sept. 9 unveiling of the latest iPhone. Shares are up about 10% in the past month. Citi analyst Atif Malik says he's expecting a strong replacement cycle for the upcoming iPhone, given that almost 50% of iPhone users are on the iPhone 14 or earlier models. Consumers will need a new model to take advantage of the many AI features Apple is working on, Malik notes.

Stock analysis: Liberty Media

Media mogul and Liberty Media (LLYVK) chair John Malone still sees more upside in Formula One after eight years of ownership.

Liberty Media introduced Formula One racing to a US-based audience through races held in Miami and Las Vegas and branched out to living rooms and smart devices courtesy of F1 TV and direct-to-consumer streaming options.

The Netflix series "Drive to Survive" also cemented its cult popularity on this side of the Atlantic. Apple's megahit "F1" movie this year only added to the sport's allure.

"Look, it's a public company. If somebody gets carried away and they want to buy it, and they're willing to pay more for it than the board thinks that they can deliver to the shareholders, then we would sell it. I mean, that's the bottom line," Malone told me in a new Opening Bid Unfiltered podcast drop.

Industry chat: Old food

The push to reengineer legacy food companies has been the playbook all year long. Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) said recently it would split its Keurig coffee business from its beverage business.

Now, a decade after their much-hyped merger, Kraft Heinz (KHC) said it would split into two public companies. One will focus on shelf-stable meals like mac and cheese. The other will put attention to Lunchables and packaged cheese.

This merger has been a disaster from the start, leading the stock price to tank 60% since 2015.

"It really has been a thorough review of what essentially was the premise that we believe that there was unlocked value in the company that wasn't truly being assessed appropriately outside," Kraft Heinz CEO Carlos Abrams-Rivera told me in an interview today. "And I think at the same time, we recognize that the complexity of the business was actually leading to not driving the type of performance that we wanted to get to."

Meanwhile, feared activist investor Elliott Management has taken a $4 billion stake in PepsiCo (PEP) and will agitate for changes to improve sagging earnings growth. PepsiCo has been struggling in recent quarters amid sticky inflation and shifting consumer health trends.

A source familiar with Elliott's thinking told me the stock is at least 50% undervalued at current levels after years of operational miscues, one of them being neglecting the core soda business.

Elliott is pushing PepsiCo to refranchise its North American bottling operations and review the cost structure of the snack business, according to a slide deck sent to PepsiCo by the firm.

A spokesperson for PepsiCo didn't return Yahoo Finance's request for comment.

Tesla scheduled its shareholder meeting for November 6, the first since its sales and shares declined.

Tesla rejected 11 investor proposals calling for accountability and sustainability.

Elon Musk wants Tesla's shareholder meeting to focus on xAI, but many investors have other concerns.

Tesla investors have some proposals for the company, but at least 11 of those won't be discussed at the coming shareholder meeting in November.

Business Insider reviewed a dozen shareholder proposals submitted ahead of the July 31 deadline that some shareholders would like to discuss with Tesla's board.

The 12 proposals come from both state-managed and private funds and ask Tesla to commit to a range of sustainability and accountability measures.

Tesla's November 6 meeting is the company's first since the heightened scrutiny of its CEO, Elon Musk, over his involvement with DOGE, followed by a public falling out with President Donald Trump and his announcement of a new political party.

The EV giant is also facing declining sales over the past two quarters, and its share price has fallen more than 30% since its peak in December 2024.

It is not unusual for shareholder proposals to be rejected ahead of a meeting.

Shareholder proposals only appear on the Securities and Exchange Commission docket whenever the company files a "no-action" request to the SEC, which the SEC then reviews and either concurs with the company or allows it to proceed. There are several reasons the SEC may concur with the "no-action" request, including economic relevance, false statements, or others.

Business Insider viewed 11 proposals that Tesla requested the SEC to exclude from its November meeting agenda. One proposal that was accepted and will be put to a vote was shared with Business Insider by Thomas DiNapoli, the New York State Comptroller. Tesla opposes it.

"This AGM is an opportunity for Tesla's board to restore our confidence in its ability to redress the damage done," Kevin Thomas, CEO of Shareholder Association for Research and Education, told Business Insider, referring to the annual general meeting. SHARE is a Canadian organization that promotes responsible investment and shareholder engagement. Thomas submitted a proposal on behalf of a client named Richard Krieger. Tesla rejected the proposal.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

The proposals focus on accountability mechanisms

Based on SEC rules that apply to all public companies, shareholders are eligible to submit proposals as long as they have held more than $2,000 worth of shares continuously for three years, more than $15,000 worth of shares continuously for two years, or at least $25,000 worth of shares for one year. The shareholder must also submit a written intent to continue to hold eligible amounts through the date of the shareholder meeting.

DiNapoli, who oversees the New York State Common Retirement Fund, which owned more than $1 billion worth of Tesla shares as of December 2024, showed Business Insider his proposal on ensuring that all shareholders have equal rights to sue Tesla.

The proposal is in response to a company bylaw limiting derivative lawsuits to shareholders with more than 3% in stakes, which DiNapoli told Business Insider violates "basic tenets of good corporate governance."

His proposal was accepted, but a spokesperson from his office told Business Insider that Tesla opposes the measure itself.

A company is entitled to ask the SEC for permission to exclude a shareholder proposal, but the shareholder can appeal to the SEC to obtain a non-binding ruling on whether the agency agrees with the exclusion of said proposal.

Among those rejected are proposals that:

Ask Tesla to disclose how many veterans it hires,

Pledge to use AI in a way that supports renewable energy,

Not to engage in deep-sea mineral mining,

Align business strategy with the Paris Climate Agreement,

Look into sustainable tires,

Ensure workplace rights in Tesla's factories, such as the freedom to unionize (the proposal submitted by SHARE on behalf of Krieger),

Ask for an annual report to assess the effectiveness of the company's antidiscrimination efforts,

Increasing oversight on Tesla's HR practice,

Issue a report on how the company plans to reduce its emissions,

Disclose all monetary and non-monetary contributions used to influence elections,

Disclose how diversity and sustainability goals relate to bonuses or increased compensation among executives.

As for Musk, the CEO wants Tesla to continue to invest in xAI and will put the matter to a shareholder vote.

Musk (and his pay package) will likely be a topic of discussion at the meeting.

Shareholders, even those bullish on Tesla, have expressed frustration with the CEO in recent months.

Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management, manages between $60 and $70 million worth of Tesla shares.

"Tesla still makes the best EVs, but nobody on the board seems to want to address the fact that everybody hates Elon and won't buy the cars," Gerber told Business Insider. "I see Tesla developing their cabs in scale, and I have to ask: do people really need more ride-hailing options, and do we see a future where people forsake car ownership?"

"Who's going to take Elon's cab if they're out protesting in front of a diner?" Gerber added, referencing the new Tesla diner Musk opened in West Hollywood.

Musk has his defenders. Christopher Tsai, the Chief Investment Officer of Tsai Capital, which owns around $23 million worth of Tesla shares, told BI that he sees Musk as "the equivalent of Einstein" and supports an investment in xAI. He said he would like to see the CEO work on solidifying the position against "activist shareholders."

"It would be a shame for Elon not to remain at the helm of Tesla because he has the ability to contribute so much to shareholders," Tsai added. "That being said, I would just prefer less involvement in government so that he has even more time to spend on his companies."

All eyes were on Bill Belichick and North Carolina football as the first-year head coach made his college coaching debut against TCU.

The Horned Frogs quickly spoiled what was supposed to a celebratory game for Belichick, as the oldest coach in college football kicked off a new chapter of his illustrious coaching career. Coach Sonny Dykes and TCU defeated North Carolina 48-14 on Monday, Sept. 1, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

"I think we all felt a little disrespected, maybe, coming in. There was a lot of conversation and none of it was about us. I think we all were highly motivated. REQUIRED READING: Bill Belichick's North Carolina debut turns into debacle with blowout loss to TCU

Dykes, who led the Horned Frogs to the national championship game in 2022 in his first season with the program, said TCU felt disrespected due to the national attention surronding North Carolina leading up to the Week 1 matchup.

"I think we all felt a little disrespected, maybe, coming in," Dykes told ESPN's Holly Rowe after the game. "There was a lot of conversation and none of it was about us. So, I think we're all highly motivated, our players are certainly excited to play.

"Thought we did a great job of – North Carolina came out and executed really well on the first drive, we got down early and it looked great for us. Our guys just hung in there and we really prepared well. Really proud of our guys, they put a lot of work in and it showed up today. "

The Horned Frogs won six of their final seven games to end the season in 2024, and kicked off the 2025 season with a big season-opening win over North Carolina, showing they might just be among the top contenders for a wide-open Big 12 championship.

TCU returns third-year starter Josh Hoover, who's one of the most underrated quarterbacks in college football after passing for 3,949 yards with 27 touchdowns to 11 interceptions last season. The Horned Frogs also deployed a strong rushing attack against the Tar Heels, taking 35 carries as a team for 258 yards with two touchdowns.

Kevorian Barnes led the way on the ground with 11 rushes for 113 yards and a score against North Carolina. Hoover passed for 284 yards with two touchdowns to an interception in his first start of the season.

The Horned Frogs certainly had some fun with the win, given their perceived disrespect they felt, which was made evident by Dykes comments.

TCU even reposted a clip on X of Belichick and North Carolina's first episode of their upcoming Hulu docuseries similar to "Hard Knocks," making quite the joke after its huge win.

"When does episode one come out?" the Horned Frogs' X account wrote.

LONDON (AP) — England coach Thomas Tuchel has added Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jarell Quansah to his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

AC Milan's Loftus-Cheek and Bayer Leverkusen's Quansah have been included after Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton pulled out because of injury.

Midfielder Loftus-Cheek has not played for England since November 2018 and has 10 caps.

Defender Quansah is still to play for his national team, despite being included in senior squads.

England plays Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday and travels to Belgrade to play Serbia the following Tuesday.

Matt OkadaSeptember 2, 2025 at 11:42 PM

Preseason? Done. Training camp? Done. Fantasy football drafts? Done ... or finishing this week, if you prefer living on the edge. Between free agency, the NFL Draft, months of beat reports and dozens of preseason "highlights," the final "values" for every player have been set. But some of them moved quite a bit over the summer, and some expectations are much higher now than they were the last time you checked.

So here is a fantasy stock report on the most noteworthy hype trains of the 2025 offseason — a precursor to the weekly column I'll be writing here at Yahoo every Tuesday throughout the season! Are we all aboard ... or proceeding with caution? Enjoy, and good luck in the 2025 fantasy season!

[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season]

Honorable Mentions

Before we get to the true hype machines of the summer, there's a hefty list of late risers worth flagging for early-season waiver wires. These players went undrafted in most leagues, so if you've got room on the bench — or if you can make room — consider tucking one away. Ollie Gordon II (Dolphins), Woody Marks (Texans) and Dylan Sampson (Browns) are three intriguing rookie running backs on unhealthy, unsettled depth charts. The way things are trending now, all three should be in the mix for early-season work and could play themselves into fantasy relevance out the gate. Speaking of rookies, wideouts Isaac TeSlaa (Lions) and Dont'e Thornton Jr. (Raiders) have been the darlings of the "diehard" fantasy community recently. With impressive preseasons and absurd athletic profiles, both receivers are packing sneaky upside if they can earn significant targets.

On the flip side, "Ol' Reliable" Keenan Allen has been a sudden late riser after signing back with the Chargers in early August — he has an established rapport with Justin Herbert and will likely join Ladd McConkey at the top of the target pecking order in Los Angeles. And if you're looking for a tight end to stash, Chig Okonkwo is one of the biggest risers of the last couple weeks, as something of a post-hype sleeper. He's reportedly found chemistry with rookie QB Cam Ward and could very easily be the No. 2 option in this offense behind only Calvin Ridley.

Spoiler alert: I've snuck extra names into almost all of these top "five" but they're thematic! (Please don't snitch to my editors).

5. TreVeyon Henderson & Omarion Hampton, Patriots & Chargers, RBs

Our first duo features the rookie running backs who cracked the top-four rounds of drafts by the end of August. Omarion Hampton was there a little longer, following his first-round NFL draft selection and Najee Harris's infamous July 4th eye incident. The reports around Harris's recovery have remained oddly blurry, and Hampton settled into the third round as a result. Meanwhile, TreVeyon Henderson saw a major August spike thanks to flashy performances in the preseason and unending positive reports out of camp. He climbed from the 5-6 turn at the start of August into the fourth round by the end of it ... and often sneaks into the third in sharper leagues.

I'm buying heavily into the hype on both rookies and would not be surprised to see both in fantasy RB1 territory by midseason. Hampton profiles as the lead back — and the far more explosive option — in Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman's offense. That's fantasy gold regardless of draft capital, but the front office also spent the 22nd overall pick on this kid less than five months ago. He's going to eat.

As for Henderson, he was picked half a round after Hampton, but is even more dynamic and versatile. His only roadblocks to stardom are the "healthy" Rhamondre Stevenson and the trustworthiness of the Patriots offense. The drumbeat out of New England suggests Henderson is already surpassing the veteran back as the team's RB1, and I expect the offense to improve with returning OC Josh McDaniels, Year 2 Drake Maye, a quietly healthy Stefon Diggs and Henderson himself leading the charge. And if either of these running backs starts the season slow — not uncommon for rookies — be ready to send out trade offers. They're going to hit big sooner rather than later.

4. Emeka Egbuka & Matthew Golden, Buccaneers & Packers, WRs

While they're not going quite as early as Hampton and Henderson, rookie wideouts Emeka Egbuka and Matthew Golden have seen similar hype over the last month. Both have risen quickly on their own depth charts amid strong showings and injuries around them. When the Buccaneers drafted Egbuka 19th overall, it looked like he might start his career buried behind Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and late-2024 breakout Jalen McMillan. But with Godwin likely to miss a month or more battling to return from multiple ankle surgeries, and McMillan out for the foreseeable future with a preseason neck injury, things have changed. Egbuka will now be starting alongside Mike Evans — who's 32 years old and might have lost a step or two last season — and could start the year well ahead of the WR3 price tag he reached in ADP. Over in Green Bay, Golden has essentially become the de facto No. 1 for Jordan Love with Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks and Christian Watson all dealing with injuries over the past month. The Packers drafted Golden in the first round to eventually fill this role, but the speed and security with which he's stepped into it has been impressive.

"Buying into" the hype for this receiver duo takes a little less than it does for Hampton and Henderson — the RBs went 4-5 rounds earlier in drafts. And their upside as overall fantasy players is likely more capped — both Egbuka and Golden could feasibly be high-end WR2s, but are unlikely to crack WR1 territory. Still, even after the rising multiple rounds through the summer, they ended up in low-WR3 to high-WR4 range. Between the draft capital, evident talent and open opportunity in promising offenses, that's hype worth buying into. While they won't crack every starting lineup to open the season, expect to see both in FLEX spots as early as Week 2.

3. Tyler Warren, Colts, TE

Warren cracked the final list of biggest ADP risers in our weekly column after rising 2-3 rounds in August. And it's not hard to see why. As a prospect, Warren combined Rob Gronkowski size and athleticism with Brock Bowers' production, and it landed him at the 14th overall draft pick to Indianapolis. Then Warren's biggest roadblock to an early breakout was removed when the Colts named Daniel Jones the starter over Anthony Richardson Sr. While Jones is no Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, he completes 15% more of his passes than Richardson and has a better chance of supporting a fantasy-relevant tight end.

Still, while Jones is better than Richardson, that's not a particularly high bar and doesn't guarantee success for his pass-catchers. Evan Engram was Jones' tight end for three seasons in New York and was rarely startable over that stretch — he caught just five touchdowns in 30 games under the former Giants QB. Warren will also be competing with Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs for targets in a low-pass-volume Shane Steichen offense. While the young tight end has plenty of "top-12" green flags, projecting him for anything close to the production of recent rookie stars Sam LaPorta and Brock Bowers would be a stretch. He should land somewhere around Engram, Tucker Kraft and David Njoku near the TE1 fringe — rankings that have him in the top six or seven have gone too far.

2. Braelon Allen & Tank Bigsby, Jets & Jaguars, RBs

In a list consisting mostly of rookies, Braelon Allen and Tank Bigsby's hype comes from a different angle. Both are young backs who initially seemed "stuck" behind more notable starters — Breece Hall and Travis Etienne Jr., respectively. But over the past month, both have made significant noise as the potential leaders of more balanced committees. And both are excellent analogs for players from their new coaches' recent pasts. Allen is a 6-foot-1, 235-pound terror who draws occasional comparisons to Derrick Henry and has been tagged as the "David Montgomery" of head coach Aaron Glenn and OC Tanner Engstrand's new "Sonic and Knuckles" duo in New York. And Bigsby is a fitting replacement for Bucky Irving in Liam Coen's new home — Jacksonville — as the hard-to-tackle hammer alongside Etienne's receiving focus.

The question is: Without an injury to the "incumbent," can either of these young RBs carve out a significant enough role to matter for fantasy? And the answer is yes. Both are (arguably) the superior pure runners in their backfields, and both Hall and Etienne might be better suited for pass-heavy snap shares and fewer between-the-tackles carries. Allen and Bigsby's rise in prominence have contributed to trade rumors around both of their counterparts, and while they may not materialize early in the season (or ever), they may be indicative of shifts in the depth chart. RBBC (running back by committee) is the way of the modern NFL, and is extremely hard to avoid outside the first couple rounds. Where Allen and Bigsby ended up going — in the eighth or ninth — is a fine spot to find future fantasy starters in these "foggy" committees. Both could be contributors as early as Week 1 — and if the usage scales tip far enough from the start, could be strong RB2s all season long.

1. Jacory Croskey-Merritt & Austin Ekeler, Commanders, RBs

Without a doubt the biggest hype train of the 2025 summer belongs to Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt, the Commanders' seventh-round pick and running back of the future ... if you buy into the hype. There was excited talk about JCM's ascent even before Washington traded Brian Robinson Jr., but as soon as they shipped B-Rob off to the Bay, all (hype) hell broke loose. From his low point in the 200s (by ADP) all the way into the eighth or ninth round, Croskey-Merritt saw the most meteoric rise of the offseason and is widely being touted as one of the hottest "sleeper" picks in fantasy — if such a thing even exists anymore.

However, as I said in the Risers piece on Croskey-Merritt, I'm far less convinced. Remember, JCM was picked in the last round of the draft back in April. In the last 25 years, just one running back picked in the last round managed to crest 100 fantasy points as a rookie: Isiah Pacheco hit 128.5 to finish as the RB33 in 2022. The next best? Peyton Hillis for the Broncos in 2008, with just 95.2 fantasy points on the season. Historically speaking, it's really, really ... really unlikely that Croskey-Merritt becomes a regular fantasy starter. You know what's less unlikely? That a 30-year-old back who finished top two at the position in both 2021 and 2022, lost 2023 to injury, and then was quietly efficient and effective as a backup in 2024, might take the reigns in this Commanders backfield and be the actual sleeper for 2025. I'm talking, of course, about Austin Ekeler, who's also garnered some hype — though far less than Bill — after the Robinson trade. Out of 50 RBs with 100+ touches last year, Ekeler's 1.02 fantasy points per touch was third-most, behind only Jahmyr Gibbs and James Cook — ahead of Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley (among many others). Ekeler went a round later than JCM in ADP, but I would have taken him at least a round earlier (and did a couple times). It's not impossible Croskey-Merritt breaks all the rules of historical data, but I'm hitching my cart to the far quieter, but far more reliable Ekeler hype horse heading into the year.

🏈 Belichick era starts with a dud

The Belichick era got off to a horrid start on Monday night in Chapel Hill, where the Tar Heels suffered a blowout 48-14 loss to TCU.

From Yahoo Sports' Dan Wolken:

Since he took the job last December, having been thoroughly rejected by the NFL despite his six Super Bowl Rings, the football world has been wondering what 73-year-old Bill Belichick would look like coaching a college team.

It subsequently became a nine-month journey of interest in his personal life, a book tour, a series of awkward interviews and a branding initiative led by his 24-year-old girlfriend.

What we didn't hear much about was the football team he had to coach. Maybe now we know why.

North Carolina's 48-14 drubbing at the hands of TCU was evidence that $10 million for the most accomplished coach in the history of the sport may not go as far as it used to.

In the NFL, we can debate where Belichick ranks among names like Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh and Chuck Noll. As a college coach, Belichick's debut was more in the realm of his former Patriots assistant Charlie Weis, who once described his recruiting pitch at Kansas thusly: "Have you looked at that pile of crap out there?"

Belichick, of course, is too buttoned up to provide such a juicy sound bite. But his assessment of the proceedings Monday was direct and in character.

"They just outplayed us, they outcoached us and they were better than we were. That's all there is to it," Belichick said, speaking in front of a backdrop of balloons that seemed far too festive for the occasion. "They did a lot more things right than we did. Give them credit for being the better team."

While it would be imprudent to declare the Belichick experiment a failure already, you get this kind of honeymoon only once.

As kickoff approached Monday, idyllic Chapel Hill looked like something it has never been: A real college football town with packed tailgates and bars, Tar Heel celebrities like Michael Jordan and Mia Hamm jetting in to be part of the atmosphere and ESPN treating the game like a national event.

Instead, it quickly turned into a social media pile-on. After scoring easily on their first scripted drive to take a 7-0 lead, the Tar Heels played like they have the potential to end up one of the worst teams in FBS.

Did you enjoy the playoff games in Columbus, Clemson, Miami and Tallahassee? That's what they felt like. Big brands. Home stadiums. Exciting atmospheres. Perhaps we could see it all again come December.

Columbus, Ohio — The Arch Manning era got off to a rocky start, as No. 3 Ohio State's defense shut down the top-ranked Longhorns in a 14-7 victory, making Texas the first preseason No. 1 team to lose its opener since 1990.

Sportsbooks make bank: BetMGM's top five Week 1 bets by total money wagered — led by Texas +1 — all went the way of the house in a brutal weekend for the betting public.

Clemson, South Carolina — No. 9 LSU took down No. 4 Clemson, 17-10, for their first Week 1 win since 2019, when they went 15-0 en route to a national title. Could this finally be the year Brian Kelly and the Tigers break through in a crowded SEC?

Heisman Watch: LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier (28/38, 230 yards, TD) leapfrogged Manning to become the new Heisman favorite (+650 at BetMGM), just ahead of South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers (+700). Manning fell from +500 to +1600.

Miami, Florida — No. 10 Miami hung on to beat No. 4 Notre Dame, 27-24, thanks to a clutch 47-yard field goal from newcomer Carter Davis with just over a minute left.

Highlight reel: CJ Daniels gave Miami the lead going into halftime with an incredible one-handed catch, pictured above.

Tallahassee, Florida — Fans stormed the field after unranked Florida State stunned No. 8 Alabama, 31-17, in convincing fashion. The Seminoles went 2-10 last season and entered as 14-point underdogs.

Trouble in Tuscaloosa? A mere 14 games into the post-Nick Saban era, Alabama football is in crisis. That's already four losses as a double-digit favorite under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Lee Corso went out on top, going a perfect 6-for-6 with his picks on the final "College GameDay" show of his legendary career. With an average audience of 3.5 million viewers on ESPN, Corso's highly-anticipated finale was the most-watched edition of "GameDay" ever.

⛳️ 24 winners

Miranda Wang (-20) won the FM Championship by a stroke over world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul, continuing a remarkable streak on the LPGA Tour where there still hasn't been a repeat winner this season. 23 tournaments, 24 winners (one event featured teams).

🏀 4th triple-double

Luka Dončić put up 26 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists on Sunday in Slovenia's win over Belgium, notching the fourth triple-double in EuroBasket history. The other three: Poland's Mateusz Ponitka (2022), Romania's Rareș Mandache (2017) and Croatia's Toni Kukoč (1995).
