As meteorologist Jonathan Belles recently noted, September is historically known as the most active month of Atlantic hurricane season. Is that reputation proving to be true this year?

Well, as we follow live updates of the weather today, we'll be tracking the development of a tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic that may soon develop into Tropical Storm Gabrielle. Our early models show some concern for the Caribbean.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Lorena is causing flooding in western Mexico without even making landfall.

Follow along below for the latest live updates as they happen today.

(12:50 p.m. EDT) Wildfires Grow In California After Lightning Strikes

More than a dozen wildfires erupted in California on Tuesday, including the 6-5 Fire that has devastated the town of Chinese Camp east of Stockton. The sudden outburst of blazes followed a major lightning storm early Tuesday morning.

Cal Fire has grouped many of those blazes as the TCU September Lightning Complex and more than 1,000 emergency personnel have been deployed to help contain them.

Meanwhile, the Salt 14-2 Fire in Fresno County has grown to be one of the largest in the state currently, with 13,500 burned and only 7% containment.

(12:21 p.m. EDT) Storms Rip Roof Off Wichita-Area School

From staff writer Renee Straker:

Classes are canceled today at Elyria Christian School after wind gusts up to 75 mph tore off part of the school's roof Wednesday evening. This morning school officials told us teams were up to 2 a.m. trying to patch the roof after rain damaged two classrooms and a hallway.

The storms also pelted Central Kansas with baseball-sized hail that damaged cars and knocked out power to thousands. Check out this video of how bad it got.

(11:53 a.m. EDT) Hurricane Lorena Causes Flooding In Mexico

From staff writer Renee Straker:

Even without landfall Hurricane Lorena caused some serious flooding in western Mexico. Posts across social media should flash floods running rampant through streets in popular tourist areas like Cabo San Lucas.

Then Mexico's National Guard shared video and photos of soldiers cleaning up flooded streets, and digging cars out of the mud and debris.

(Reuters) -Avride said on Thursday it is scaling up the testing of its vehicles in Dallas, as the autonomous technology startup prepares to launch robotaxis on Uber.

Autonomous technology companies have been entering into partnerships with ride-hailing and delivery startups to commercialize robotic food deliveries.

Avride had announced a broader partnership with Uber in October last year and its delivery robots were launched on the Uber Eats platform in Austin in November which were later expanded to Dallas and Jersey City.

By the end of the year, Avride's autonomous vehicles will join the Uber platform as robotaxis, bringing both the startup's products to the same platform.

"Soon, Uber riders will have a new way to move around the city, marking another step toward making autonomous transportation part of everyday life," said Sarfraz Maredia, Uber's head of autonomous mobility & delivery.

The robotaxi fleet in Dallas will leverage Hyundai Motor's cutting-edge IONIQ 5 EV platform, integrated with Avride's autonomous driving technology.

Avride partnered with Hyundai to expand its fleet of robotaxis in March this year, and signed a deal with the South Korean automaker to jointly develop and operate self-driving vehicles.

The startup has also collaborated with food delivery company Grubhub to deploy its robots on college campuses across the United States.

Washington — President Trump is hosting a dinner Thursday night at the White House with tech giants and other business and political leaders, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk will not be among those attending.

He said on X, "I was invited, but unfortunately could not attend. A representative of mine will be there."

Invited guests include Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and OpenAI founder Sam Altman, according to a White House official. It will be the first known official event held in the newly renovated Rose Garden, which was partially covered in cement in order to more easily allow for tables and chairs. The Hill first reported the list of invitees.

Musk earlier this year had a public falling out with Mr. Trump as he left the administration, blasting Mr. Trump and his administration over government spending and the Epstein files. He pledged to begin a new political party, dubbed the "America Party," although that has yet to come to fruition.

Earlier this week, Mr. Trump predicted that Musk would eventuallly return to the Republican Party.

"I don't think he has a choice," Mr. Trump said in an interview this week on "The Scott Jennings Radio Show." "So what's he going to do, he's gonna go with the radical left lunatics? They're lunatics. I don't think he has a choice. He's a man of common sense, he's a good man."

The president said of Musk,"He's a good man. He got off the reservation, incorrectly, and that's okay, because, you know, it's just one of those things." He also characterized the Tesla CEO as "80% super genius, and then 20% he's got some problems," and added, "and when he works out the 20%, he'll be great, but he's got some difficulty."

The dinner, expected to take place behind closed doors, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. First Lady Melania Trump is hosting an AI summit earlier in the day, and some of the dinner attendees are expected to attend.

Mr. Trump has pursued close relationships with tech CEOs, hosting a number of them for White House meetings and even giving them prime access at his inauguration. A number of those CEOs donated to his inauguration fund.

LONDON (AP) — An Ethiopian man was found guilty Thursday of sexually assaulting a woman and a 14-year-old girl days after he had sought asylum in Britain, in a case that triggered angry protests at hotels housing migrants.

A judge at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court east of London convicted Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu of two counts of sexual assault, one count of attempted sexual assault, one count of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity and one count of harassment without violence.

Prosecutors said Kebatu, 41, had arrived in England by small boat just over a week before he tried to kiss the 14-year-old on a bench in the town of Epping, put his hand on her thigh and stroked her hair.

He also sexually assaulted a woman who had offered to help him with his CV by trying to kiss her, putting his hand on her leg and telling her she was pretty, the prosecution said.

Kebatu had denied the charges.

Judge Christopher Williams said he would sentence the defendant on Sept. 23.

Kebatu's arrest and prosecution sparked protests outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, where he was staying along with other newly arrived migrants. More protests followed, in Epping and other towns, involving local people but also organized and attended by far-right activists. In some cases the demonstrators were outnumbered by counterprotesters supporting refugees.

Tensions have long simmered over the British government's policy of using hotels to house migrants who are awaiting a decision on their asylum status. Critics say it costs taxpayers millions of pounds, while the hotels become flashpoints in communities and leave migrants feeling targeted by local residents.

The British government has pledged to stop migrants trying to reach Britain across the Channel and to end the use of asylum hotels, but says it will take time.

Investment legend Warren Buffett recently announced he'll be stepping down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of this year. More than a business icon, Buffett has influenced how millions of people worldwide manage their money, and his upcoming retirement has already had an impact. Berkshire Hathaway shares dropped after the announcement, and one longtime friend and biographer called him "literally not replaceable," according to Business Insider.

His retirement at 95 probably isn't a surprise, but it shows that even the people relied on most eventually move on. When a steady hand disappears — whether it's a boss, mentor or parent — decisions that used to feel guided suddenly fall entirely on one person.

Before that happens, these six lessons can help build financial resilience and independence.

Trending Now: Suze Orman's Secret to a Wealthy Retirement--Have You Made This Money Move?

The Value of Planting Seeds Early

When Buffett famously said "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago," he was talking about long-term planning, and it's a lesson for more than just investments. Planning ahead, with things like consistently adding to savings, is one of the best ways to develop a healthier financial position over time.

The Importance of Cash Flow

It's easy to be complacent about money with a safety net in place, so it's important to be prepared in terms of cash flow. Keeping track of income and being cautious with spending can keep essentials covered and prevent a last minute scramble for cash in the case of an emergency. A healthy cash flow is the backbone of financial stability.

Confidence Is Key

Leaning too much on someone else for financial guidance can slow progress toward independence and leave doubts about making decisions. When every choice feels guided, it's easy to second-guess instincts or wait for permission. Mistakes are inevitable, but taking responsibility and learning from them builds both resilience and lasting confidence.

Life Doesn't Always Go To Plan

Unexpected bumps in the road like job losses or health emergencies can hit extra hard after the loss of a safety net. It's never going to be easy to predict what might happen, but preparing for emergencies as much as individual circumstances allow can help. Things like building an emergency fund and thinking through worst-case scenarios can make it a lot easier to stay on track when life throws a curveball.

Stress Can Lead To Poor Decisions

Financial stress often triggers poor decisions, but trying to develop patience and focus can help avoid acting without thinking. Keeping a clear head when things get messy, whether it's a market dip or a personal setback, protects long-term goals. Emotional resilience is just as important as any financial plan.

Relying too heavily on others is never a recipe for financial independence. Building habits, gaining confidence and taking ownership of finances today creates freedom and options for tomorrow. When the steady hand disappears, independence becomes essential.

Key Points -

The S&P 500 index swooned in early 2025 but has since recovered and moved to record highs.

Corrections are natural, but it seems unlikely the excesses were cleared out by the early-year drop.

At this point, the S&P 500 index's valuation numbers still appear to be on the high side.

10 stocks we like better than Vanguard S&P 500 ETF ›

The S&P 500 index is trading near all-time highs, which is good news. Or is it? On Wall Street, the market swings between bull and bear cycles. Given the lofty valuation of the market, investors need to be worried about a bear.

What does a normal market cycle look like?

Investing is an inherently emotional affair, with the excitement of making money juxtaposed against the fear of losing it. When investors are excited about making money, the market often rises to lofty levels in what are known as bull markets. When fear is gripping Wall Street, stocks fall, often slipping into what is known as a bear market. If you have been investing for even a short time, you probably know this already.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More »

A group of people looking at a parabola and math equations written in chalk on a table.

History suggests you can't have one without the other. The reason is that emotions usually drive investors to extremes. So when bull markets are running, investors price in too much good news, stretching the valuations of stocks. There are usually good reasons to be excited, but investors just get too excited to justify the prices being paid. That's when a bear market comes in, with a drop in stock prices returning valuations to more normal levels. But then investor pessimism normally goes too far, pushing stocks lower still.

And then the cycle starts again, as investors jump back into the market. This is the big pendulum swing that Howard Marks, the co-founder of OakTree Capital Management, talks about in his books. If you don't know Marks, he is famous for having called the economic and market downturn that eventually became known as the Great Recession. Not only did he call that recession, he and his clients also profited from it.

SPY Chart

SPY data by YCharts

Where are we in the cycle?

Before you get the wrong impression, Marks is not a market timer. Market timing, or trying to buy at the bottom and sell at the top, is pretty much impossible to do consistently. Marks isn't trying to be perfect; he's just trying to figure out generally where the pendulum may be at any given time and then adjust to that information. He recognizes that he can be out of step with the market for years before he is correct. And, in fact, that is what happened leading up to the Great Recession. And he lost clients because of his cautious investment stance.

That said, the pendulum concept can be very useful for investors as they look at the market today. With stocks at all-time highs, Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) has an average price-to-earnings ratio of 27.6. The average price-to-book value ratio is 5. Both figures are toward the high end of historical ranges for these metrics.

In other words, the market as tracked by the S&P 500 index, and any exchange-traded fund that tracks it, looks expensive right now. That doesn't mean the stock market is about to crash. But it does mean that investors should probably tread with caution. At some unknowable point in the future, likely sooner rather than later, the pendulum will swing back in the other direction, and a bear market will start.

Knowing where you are is important

If this were a baseball game, it would likely be closer to the end than the start. That's actually one very important thing to know and understand about the market today. It could stop you from taking on excessive risks in the hope that the bull market will continue indefinitely.

History suggests that a bear market is coming at some point and, given the lofty valuation of the market, now might be a good time to start preparing yourself. That could simply mean an emotional steeling or it could be more functional, like taking some risk out of your portfolio.

Should you invest $1,000 in Vanguard S&P 500 ETF right now?

Before you buy stock in Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, consider this:

(Reuters) -Honeywell said on Thursday its quantum computing company, Quantinuum, had raised about $600 million from investors including Nvidia's venture capital arm at a valuation of $10 billion.

The latest round, which doubles Quantinuum's valuation from $5 billion in January 2024, saw new investments from Quanta Computer, QED Investors and NVentures - Nvidia's venture capital arm.

The funding also saw participation from existing shareholders JPMorgan Chase, Mitsui and Quantinuum's majority owner, Honeywell, among others.

Tech giants such as Nvidia are rushing to adopt quantum computing, which can solve complex problems that would take conventional computers thousands or millions of years.

Nvidia opened a quantum computing research lab in Boston earlier this year, which works with quantum firms including Quantinuum.

Quantinuum has been in the process of raising funds in preparation for a spinoff in an initial public offering, estimated to take place by the end of 2027, Honeywell CEO Vimal Kapur said in an earnings call in July.
