FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez apologized Thursday for his behavior following his team's defeat by the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final earlier this week, antics that became the latest entry on a long list of on-field transgressions over his lengthy career.

Suárez — a longtime teammate of Inter Miami star Lionel Messi — appeared to spit toward a member of the Sounders' staff, plus grabbed at least one Seattle player by the neck during a postgame melee. Major League Soccer and Leagues Cup officials are investigating, and Suárez could face sanctions.

"First of all, I want to congratulate the Seattle Sounders on their Leagues Cup victory. But above all, I want to apologize for my behavior at the end of the match," Suárez wrote on Instagram in his native Spanish. "It was a very tense and frustrating moment. Things happened right after the match that shouldn't have happened, but that doesn't justify my reaction. I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.

"It's not the image I want to portray, neither to my family, who are suffering because of my mistakes, nor to my club, which doesn't deserve to be affected by something like this. I feel bad about what happened and didn't want to miss the opportunity to acknowledge it and apologize to everyone who felt bad about what I did."

Suárez's history is both highly colorful and highly successful.

With Suárez, Uruguay ended 20 years of World Cup underachievement by reaching the semifinals in 2010. He helped deliver Uruguay's first Copa America title in 16 years in 2011. He was instrumental in Atletico Madrid's first Spanish title in seven years in 2021.

He also is known for an infamous intentional handball in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals to take a semifinal spot from Ghana and served bans on three occasions for biting opponents — the most recent of those in 2014, after he chomped down on the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini following a tussle in the penalty area during a World Cup match.

Suárez has been involved in 16 Inter Miami goals — scoring six and assisting on 10 others — during MLS play this season, second-most on the team behind only Messi. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has 19 goals and 10 assists in MLS matches this year.

"We know there's still a long season ahead, and we're going to work together to achieve the success this club and all its fans deserve," Suárez wrote to conclude his statement Thursday. "A hug to everyone."

A jury has convicted a Florida grandmother of murder in the shooting death of her daughter's ex-husband, who was killed by hitmen amid a bitter divorce and custody battle.

Donna Adelson was convicted on Thursday, Sept. 4, of murder, solicitation to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy in the shooting death of Daniel Markel, her former son-in-law and a law professor at Florida State University killed in his Tallahassee driveway on July 18, 2014.

Adelson cried out when the first guilty verdict was read and wept as the other two also came in as guilty.

The jury reached a swift decision after attorneys on both sides delivered their closing arguments in the more than two-week trial.

Prosecutor Georgia Cappleman apologized to jurors that "there's not a smoking gun" in the case against Adelson. "But she was too smart for that."

She urged them to find Adelson guilty: "Don't let the way she thought she'd get away with this be the way she gets away with this."

Adelson's attorney, Jackie Fulford, told jurors that prosecutors lacked much evidence and that Adelson was innocent.

The verdict mark the end of a decade-long trial process that included the convictions of four others in the murder-for-hire plot to kill Daniel Markel.

PARIS (Reuters) -A viral French X account has tapped into rising generational tensions in France, where squeezed millennials rallying under the slogan "Nicolas foots the bill" say that better-off baby boomers should do more to fix the country's huge deficit.

With the government facing collapse over how to plug the euro zone's biggest deficit, younger workers are increasingly accusing the boomer generation, those born between 1945 and 1964, of saddling France with unsustainable debt.

The creator of the "NicolasQuiPaie" X account, which has drawn over 74,000 followers, told Reuters he launched the movement to defend his generation, arguing politicians tend to cater to pensioners who vote more reliably.

"They have so much voting power that no effort is ever demanded of them. So politicians keep squeezing workers," he said in a written interview, asking to remain anonymous to protect his career.

French pensioners retire early, and their generous pensions have risen with inflation, unlike wages, helping to shield them from cost-of-living crises. As they live longer, they are straining a post-war pension system that is struggling to keep pace with modern demographics. Meanwhile, their once-affordable homes are increasingly inaccessible for first-time buyers.

On social media, the hashtag #NicolasQuiPaie has gone viral, with thousands identifying with "Nicolas," a fictional millennial - people born in the 1980s and 90s - whose taxes they say disproportionately fund France's generous welfare state.

While the left has largely dismissed #NicolasQuiPaie, politicians from the right and far right have sought to court the movement, hoping to marshal the grassroots anger at a time when every vote counts in France's deeply polarised parliament.

"There's a form of hypocrisy because those who want to take advantage of the movement are those who have constantly defended pensioners," Maxime Sbaihi, a demographics expert, told Reuters, adding that people over 50 now account for a majority of voters.

A self-styled libertarian and "minarchist," a proponent of minimal state intervention, the creator of the X account told Reuters he comes from a middle-class background.

His memes often show a burned-out, 30-year-old Nicolas in a work shirt paying to sustain the lifestyle of 70-year-old "Bernard and Chantal" sipping cocktails on a chaise longue. He says clashes with older users have been "very tense."

"Even when you raise the issue of pension-funding calmly and factually, there's a wave of hatred toward young people," he said, adding he had received insults like "slacker" or replies such as "do you want to euthanasia us?"

His portrayal of "Nicolas" also funding a fictional "Karmic" - a typically North African name - has sparked accusations of xenophobia and far-right leanings, which he denied.

He says the movement has no formal structure, doesn't feel represented by any existing party, but hopes to exert pressure on governments and influence parties ahead of elections.

"It's up to them to get off the beaten track and bring concrete solutions to the economic and security problems we're going through," he said.

NON-PARTISAN, BUT POLITICALLY COURTED

Some older French rejected being blamed for France's woes.

"We don't have a boomer problem, we have a budget problem," said Patrick Sorel, 67, as he walked in Paris with his baguette under his arm. "We paid for Nicolas' education and Nicolas' studies. Politicians need the courage to ask everyone to contribute."

Yet some politicians - including several boomers high up in the government - have shown a degree of sympathy for the concerns of "Nicolas".

Conservative Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said "there'll be a revolt" if employed people like "Nicolas" are the only ones asked to contribute to cutting the deficit, while centrist Prime Minister François Bayrou, who looks certain to lose his job in a parliamentary confidence vote on September 8, recently criticised "boomers who think everything is fine".

According to an Elabe opinion poll published on Thursday, a majority of the under-35 agree with Bayrou, while 84% of the over-50 reject this view.

Bayrou, 74, had proposed not indexing pensions to inflation in next year's budget to help reduce the deficit, prompting an outcry across party lines.

Economists say millennials have a point.

Sbaihi said that while generational inequality is widespread in developed countries, it's especially stark in France.

The pension system relies on intergenerational transfers, meaning today's workers don't save for their own pension but fund retirees directly via mandatory levies on their payslips. With longer lifespans, millennials now support an unprecedentedly large cohort of ageing boomers.

"No country has ever treated pensioners better than today's France," Sbaihi said. "The baby-boom generation lived through a golden age, but doesn't quite grasp the impact of its demographic weight."

Days after sparking a post-game brawl after the League Cup final, Luis Suárez is apologizing for his role in the fight. The Inter Miami forward took to Instagram on Thursday to express his regrets for his actions after the high-intensity match, where the Seattle Sounders defeated Miami 3-0 in dominant fashion.

Moments after the win, Suárez put a Sounders player, 20-year-old midfielder Obed Vargas, in a headlock, instigating a fight as both sides came together in scrum. It took several minutes for the two teams to be separated. At some point in the skirmish, Suárez got in the face of a member of Seattle's security staff, and seemingly spat in his face.

Suárez began Thursday's apology, written in Spanish in an Instagram story, by congratulating the Sounders on their Leagues Cup victory. He then said that he "did not want to miss the opportunity" to acknowledge his actions and apologize.

"I want to sincerely apologize for my behavior at the end of the match. It was a moment of high tension and frustration, and while certain things happened after the final whistle that should not have, that does not excuse my reaction. I was wrong, and I deeply regret it," Suárez wrote.

"This is not the example I want to set for my family, who suffer from my mistakes, no for my club, which does not deserve to be affected by such actions."

Suárez did not address any particular incident in the skirmish, and did not apologize directly to Vargas or the staff member, Gene Ramirez.

Suárez finished the apology by saying that he is "fully committed" to working with his teammates to achieve success throughout the rest of the season. Inter Miami has nine games remaining in the regular season, including a rematch against the Sounders in two weeks. The team currently sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 46 points, but has several matches in hand.

Other Miami players, including stat midfielder Sergio Busquets, were also heavily involved in the fight: Busquets appeared to put his fist to Vargas' face, while defender Maximiliano Falcón put Sounders defender Cody Baker in a headlock, among other concerning actions.

The Leagues Cup committee is looking into the postgame conduct and will assess whether to hand down punishment to players involved, per GiveMeSport's Tom Bogert. But it's possible that MLS could also step in to provide additional suspensions in league play — something that has precedent in other tournaments.

In 2019, Real Salt Lake coach Mike Petke was suspended for three games by MLS after an outburst at a referee during a Leagues Cup game; Petke, who used several homophobic slurs during the tirade, was later fired for the incident. Before that, in a U.S. Open Cup match in 2015, Sounders forward Clint Dempsey was suspended by the league for three games after ripping up a referee's notebook during a foul-heavy game that is infamously known as the "Red Card Wedding."

It's likely, then, that the MLS Disciplinary Committee will look into the melee as well. The list of infractions reviewable by the committee cover several that may be relevant to the fight, including: mass confrontation, hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent, violent conduct and additional authority for what the committee deems "egregious" behavior.

As of Thursday, MLS has yet to acknowledge the fight. The league has not indicated whether it is considering discipline for any of the players involved.

CHICAGO (Reuters) -Northwestern University's president announced his resignation on Thursday, capping a three-year tenure, after President Donald Trump's administration froze federal funding for the university and Republican lawmakers alleged that Northwestern had failed to address antisemitism on campus.

President Michael Schill said in a statement that it was the "right time" for new leadership to guide the Chicago-area university into the future and that he would remain in place until an interim president is named.

"I ... recognize that difficult problems remain, particularly at the federal level," he said. "It is critical that we continue to protect the University's research mission and excellence while preserving academic freedom, integrity, and independence."

In April, Trump's administration froze nearly $800 million in research funding for Northwestern, after Republicans in the House of Representatives accused the university of not doing enough to address antisemitism, including during campus protests against the Gaza war.

As a result, Northwestern reduced administrative and academic budgets and cut 425 positions - nearly half of which were vacant - to help fill its fiscal gap over the summer.

In a statement, White House spokesperson Liz Huston said the Trump administration "looks forward to working with the new leadership" at Northwestern.

The Trump administration has cut or threatened to strip funding to numerous U.S. universities, including Harvard, Columbia and Princeton.

On Wednesday a federal judge ruled that the administration unlawfully terminated about $2.2 billion in grants to Harvard University.

Micah Parsons had a lot to say Thursday with Sunday's blockbuster season-opener between his Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions just days away.

He took a veiled swipe at his former Dallas Cowboys teammates while praising his new teammates in Green Bay. And he made his feelings clear about the now-division rival Lions. He's not a fan.

First things first. Parsons, who's been receiving treatment for a back injury that may require an epidural injection just to play on Sunday, spoke about his experience in the Packers training room. He said that he's witnessed a wall of support from his teammates that he hasn't experienced anywhere else.

"I tell you, I've never been in a locker room with guys like this," Parsons said. "I came in Tuesday for treatment, and I saw almost every guy in the locker room. This is the first time I've ever seen this.

"That shows just how much these guys want to be here. ... They just want to be around each other and hang out. That's important to have guys that want to come into the building. Like guys that want to come in the building, they want to be here. I think that's important. And when you're around guys like that, it makes it exciting to come to work."

How bad did it get between Parsons, Cowboys teammates?

Parsons didn't say "Dallas Cowboys" when he referenced "never" having been in a locker room with guys like this. He didn't have to. The process of elimination here is easy. He meant the Dallas Cowboys.

And his statement lends credence to reports that there was a rift between not just Parsons and Cowboys management toward the end of his time in Dallas, but that the relationship between Parsons and his teammates was also strained.

While with the Cowboys, Parsons hosted a podcast in which he sometimes spoke candidly about his football opinions. This reportedly rankled teammates including quarterback Dak Prescott, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. Per that report, Parsons was seen by some of his Cowboys teammates "as egotistical and self-centered."

So exactly how bad was the relationship at the end? That much isn't clear. But it's a storyline that will continue to intrigue as the season progresses to a Week 4 showdown between the Packers and Cowboys.

As for the matchup at hand? Parsons stirred the pot there as well.

"I never liked Detroit," Parsons said. "I never like them. Even when I was in Dallas, it was just always a heavyweight fight every time they came in."

Prescott also shared candid thoughts on Detroit's propensity to use trick plays.

"Trick plays? Trick plays are for people who can't beat you straight up," Prescott said. "It's like a guy running around the ring or they're trying to jab. But meet me in the middle. Let's line it up.

"That's what guys who try to do trick plays do. They can't beat you head up. They don't want to out-physical you. They don't want to be dominant. It's a scared tactic, I guess. But I can beat you any which way."

So yeah, Parsons isn't shying away from mixing things up in media with his new team.

As for his status for Sunday's game? He continued to be a limited participant at practice Thursday because of his back injury. But he doesn't sound like a man who's planning to sit this one out.

The Packers and Lions are scheduled to kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
