TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan has confirmed its commitment to an annual $7 billion worth of energy purchases from the United States while exploring their new Alaskan liquefied natural gas (LNG) off-take agreement, a joint statement on the bilateral trade deal showed on Friday.

The U.S. will also ensure it applies its lowest tariff rates to Japanese pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, showed the statement, released by Tokyo after President Donald Trump signed an order to lower tariffs on Japanese goods to implement a deal announced in July.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Asian shares rose on Friday after U.S. stocks climbed to a record as Wall Street made its final moves ahead of an update on the American job market that could clear the way for cuts to interest rates that investors love.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 added 0.9% to 42,945.16 after data released Friday showed Japan's labor cash earnings rose 4.1% year-on-year in July, up from 3.1% in June. Another report showed household spending climbed 1.4% in July from the same month a year ago, marking growth for the third month in a row.

President Donald Trump also signed an executive order Thursday implementing the U.S. trade deal with Japan in July, with lower tariffs on Japanese car imports.

In Chinese markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index moved up 0.5% to 25,194.85, while the Shanghai Composite index added 0.4% to 3,778.95.

South Korea's Kospi edged up less than 0.1% to 3,203.13, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.3% to 8,855.20.

India's BSE Sensex was 0.2% higher, while Taiwan's Taiex jumped more than 1%.

U.S. futures were higher while oil prices edged down.

On Wall Street on Thursday, the S&P 500 added 0.8% to top the all-time high it set last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 350 points, or 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 1%.

Stocks got some lift from easing pressure from the bond market, where Treasury yields fell following the latest reports on the U.S. job market to come in worse than economists expected. One report suggested employers, not including the government, nearly halved their hiring in August from the prior month. Another said that more workers applied for unemployment benefits last week in an indication of rising layoffs.

Neither number is flashing a recession, and a third report on activity for businesses in the information and other services industries showed stronger-than-expected growth.

The upside for investors of a slowdown in the job market is that it could push the Federal Reserve to cut its main interest rate for the first time this year at its next meeting in a couple weeks. Such cuts can kickstart the economy and job market, though they can also accelerate inflation.

So far this year, the Fed has kept its main interest rate on hold because it's been more worried about inflation potentially worsening because of Trump's tariffs than about the job market.

A more comprehensive report on the job market's health during August will arrive Friday from the U.S. Labor Department and it will likely carry much weight with the Fed. Ahead of it, the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.16% from 4.22% late Wednesday.

In other dealings Friday, benchmark U.S. crude lost 13 cents to $63.35 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, slid 11 cents to $66.88 per barrel.

The U.S. dollar slipped to 148.13 Japanese yen from 148.05. The euro rose to $1.1672 from $1.1654.

PARIS (Reuters) -London-based financial technology company Revolut has hired Frederic Oudea, the former CEO of France's Societe Generale, as chairman of its Western Europe hub in Paris, as it prepares to apply for a banking licence in the country.

The hire underscores Revolut's aggressive expansion, as it enlists a heavyweight of France's corporate establishment.

The former SocGen chief, who also chairs pharmaceuticals giant Sanofi, adds clout as the fast-growing challenger bank seeks to scale its services and credibility.

Revolut announced in May that it planned to invest 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) over the next three years expanding in France, opening a new office in Paris for its Western Europe operations.

Revolut is the biggest of a number of European financial services apps founded in the past decade, with more than 60 million customers around the world but no physical branches.

It is in the process of a share sale valuing the company at $75 billion, up from $45 billion in August 2024.

Revolut gained a banking licence with restrictions in Britain in 2024, after a three-year process, and expects to start operating as a UK bank this year. The company has a Lithuanian banking licence, which it can use as a passport into the European Union, enabling it to sell products in the bloc.

A spokesperson for Revolut previously told Reuters that having a second banking licence in the bloc would allow it to build closer relationships with regulators and offer services that are more tailored for its customers in France.

Revolut is also considering buying a U.S. lender to gain a licence in the United States, according to recent media reports.

A spokesperson declined to comment on the reports.

Oudea is not the first banking leader to move to a challenger bank. In August, German online bank N26 announced a former member of the Bundesbank executive board, Andreas Dombret, as the new chair of its supervisory board.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A'ja Wilson had 31 points and eight rebounds, Jackie Young added 20 points and the Las Vegas Aces beat the first-place Minnesota Lynx 97-87 on Thursday night to set a franchise record with their 13th straight victory.

Wilson scored 30-plus points for 12th time this season to tie a WNBA record.

Las Vegas (27-14) snapped a six-game losing streak in the series, with its last victory over the Lynx coming on May 29, 2024. The Aces moved into a second-place tie with Atlanta (27-14) and Phoenix (27-14), five games behind Minnesota (32-9).

The Aces went ahead 63-55 five minutes into the third quarter after 3-pointers from Jewell Loyd and Young. Las Vegas finished the quarter up 70-66 after a buzzer-beater layup from Chelsea Gray.

Wilson hit her only 3-pointer of the game halfway through the fourth to extend the lead to 81-71.

Natisha Hiedeman scored 22 points off the bench for Minnesota, 11 in the fourth quarter. Courtney Williams added 14 points and Napheesa Collier had 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

Las Vegas shot 55.1% from the field, including 11 of 24 from 3-point range.

MERCURY 75, MYSTICS 69

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kahleah Copper scored 18 points, Alyssa Thomas had 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, and Phoenix won is sixth straight game, beating Washington.

The Mercury (27-14), who had already clinched a playoff spot, moved into a tie for second place in the WNBA standings. The Mystics (16-26), who have been eliminated from playoff contention, dropped their eighth straight game.

Sami Whitcomb scored 12 points on four 3-pointers for Phoenix. Satou Sabally added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Rookie Kiki Iriafen set a Mystics franchise record with her 16th double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Shakira Austin had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Iriafen broke Crystal Langhorne's team record with 15 in 2010.

Washington went on a late 7-0 run to get within 71-69. Austin hit a shot through contact and completed the three-point play, Sug Sutton added a 3-pointer and Iriafen made a layup with 1:06 to play.

But Sabally sank a 3-pointer and DeWanna Bonner made a free throw with 17.7 seconds left to cap the scoring.

VALKYRIES 84, WINGS 80

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Golden State became the first WNBA team to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season, with Janelle Salaun scoring 19 points in a comeback victory against Dallas for its fifth straight win.

"Let's goooooo!" Salaun screamed into the microphone moments after the final buzzer sounded as teammates pulled on black playoff T-shirts.

Veronica Burton's three-point play with 22.3 seconds to go and four free throws over the final 11.4 seconds helped seal it as she scored 15 points. Carla Leite also added 15.

Monique Billings blocked a shot with 2:34 left to set up Leite's jumper moments later before Dallas missed on the other end.

Paige Bueckers converted a three-point play with 3:34 remaining that put the Wings ahead 74-72 before the Valkyries came up with the big plays.

Salaun hit 3-pointers with 8:31 and 6:32 left, after Kate Martin's 3 with 2:15 to go in the third got Golden State going and back within 58-52.

The Valkyries had to find a rhythm again after missing 12 of 13 shots and committing four turnovers as Dallas ended the first half on a 17-3 run for a 41-32 lead at the break.

Bueckers finished with 27 points and six assists for the Wings, who lost their ninth straight and 14th of 15.

Jalen Hurts completed 19 of 23 passes and scrambled for two touchdowns, and the host Philadelphia Eagles ended an eventful opening night by putting away the Dallas Cowboys 24-20 on Thursday.

The Eagles raised their Super Bowl LIX banner before the game, then felt the mood sour when star defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott after the opening kickoff.

The first eight possessions of the game resulted in points -- and after a 65-minute lightning delay interrupted the third quarter, neither team could score again.

Hurts accounted for 214 yards (152 passing, 62 rushing) and Saquon Barkley rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles (1-0), who overcame self-inflicted mistakes along with a revamped Dallas defensive front that no longer stars Micah Parsons.

The Dallas offense and Philadelphia defense were on the field, waiting for injured Eagles special teamer Ben VanSumeren to be tended to, when Carter and Prescott began exchanging words. Carter spat on Prescott and was caught by an official just a few steps away, who disqualified him for unsportsmanlike conduct.

It was the first of many undisciplined moments for the Eagles, who committed nine penalties for 110 yards.

Javonte Williams ran for 54 yards and a pair of 1-yard touchdowns in his first game for the Cowboys (0-1), while Prescott was 21-for-34 passing for 188 yards. CeeDee Lamb led all receivers with seven catches and 110 yards.

Jake Elliott nailed a 58-yard field goal to make it 24-20 Eagles 6:30 into the second half. The Cowboys drove into the red zone and got a free set of downs when Reed Blankenship committed unnecessary roughness in the end zone on a third-down incompletion.

However, Miles Sanders fumbled on the next play, Quinyon Mitchell recovered for the Eagles and the lightning delay immediately followed.

Both offenses seemed to be out of juice by the game's 11:30 p.m. resumption. The next five possessions ended in punts, and Dallas received the ball with three minutes to go. But after Dallas reached its 38-yard line, Lamb dropped passes on first and fourth downs.

Hurts didn't target star receiver A.J. Brown until after that turnover on downs, inside the two-minute warning. Brown made a key 8-yard catch and on the next play Hurts scrambled for a first down on third and 3 to ice the game.

The Cowboys capitalized on Carter's spit by rolling down the field in six plays, with Williams scoring his first touchdown of the night. But the Eagles responded with a 10-play drive capped by Hurts' 4-yard TD scramble.

Williams punched in his next touchdown on the first play of the second quarter, completing an 88-yard Dallas drive, and again the Eagles matched them with Hurts' 8-yard scoring run.

Philadelphia held Dallas to a 41-yard field goal by Brandon Aubrey, and the Eagles ran a near-perfect two-minute drill and Barkley powered into the end zone from 10 yards. The extra point made it 21-17, but with 51 seconds left in the half, Dallas quickly drove into field goal range and Aubrey connected from 53 yards as time expired.

Eagles guard Landon Dickerson aggravated a back injury and left the game in the fourth quarter.

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Harold Osorio scored late to give El Salvador a 1-0 away win over Guatemala on Thursday in the first match of the final round of Central America World Cup qualifiers.

Osorio's 79th-minute goal was just enough for the Salvadorians who're trying to advance for their first World Cup since Spain in 1982.

El Salvador leads Group A with three points, two clear of Panama and Suriname.

El Salvador will be aiming for back-to-back wins when it hosts Suriname next Monday, when Guatemala visits Panama.

Twelve teams, divided into three groups, are vying for three direct spots from regional qualifying for next year's World Cup. The United States, Canada and Mexico have qualified automatically as World Cup co-hosts.

In the earlier CONCACAF World Cup Group A qualifying game, Panama salvaged a scoreless draw against Suriname.

"It was what I had predicted in my analysis of Suriname, and it was a crazy match with chances for both sides," Panama coach Thomas Christiansen said. "We could have won, but we also have to recognize the chances they had."

It was the first time that Panama — ranked 30th by FIFA and the runner-up in the last CONCACAF Nations League — faced No. 136 Suriname in this round of qualifying.
