Document described as a suicide note purportedly written by the late Jeffrey Epstein

May 6 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Wednesday released a document described as a suicide note purportedly written by the late Jeffrey Epstein and including the line: "It is a treat to be able ‌to choose one’s time to say goodbye."

Epstein, the disgraced financier and accused sex trafficker, was found dead in ‌his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 in what was ruled a suicide.

The handwritten note was said to have been found by his former jail cellmate, convicted murderer and ex‑police officer Nicholas Tartaglione. U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas, who oversaw the Tartaglione case, released the note after a request by The New York Times, which reported its existence last week.

Karas ruled that the note qualified as a judicial document subject to the public’s right of access because it was submitted in connection with Tartaglione's criminal case. Tartaglione is serving four consecutive life sentences ‌for drug‑related murders. Karas oversaw that case.

The judge found no legal reason to keep it under seal. But nor did he vouch for the note's authenticity, nor assess its chain of custody. Instead he treated those issues as irrelevant to the unsealing decision.

"No party has identified any competing consideration that would justify sealing the Note," the judge ruled.

The note, scrawled on a yellow legal pad, was submitted by lawyers for Tartaglione, who was Epstein's cellmate for roughly two weeks in July 2019 while both were held at a Manhattan jail.

"They investigated me for month - Found NOTHING!!! So 15 year old charges resulted,” the note says, ‌according to an image of it released in the court file. "It is a treat to be able to choose ones time to say goodbye. Watcha want me to do - Burst out cryin!! NO FUN - NOT WORTH IT!!"

Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 in Florida to soliciting prostitution from a minor, a conviction that led to a controversial plea deal and a short jail sentence. He was arrested again in July 2019 and charged with sex trafficking of minors, accused of recruiting and abusing underage ‌girls in New York and Florida.

The note surfaced in July 2019, after Epstein was found alive in his Manhattan jail cell with marks on his neck in what authorities later described as an apparent suicide attempt. According to public descriptions by Tartaglione, the note was tucked inside a book in ‌their shared cell. Epstein died several weeks later, on August 10, 2019, in a separate incident ruled a suicide.

Tartaglione mentioned the note in a podcast interview last year but the issue gained widespread attention after the Times reported on its existence last Thursday. The Times reported that the note was never seen by federal investigators and was absent from ‌millions of Epstein‑related documents released by the Justice Department in recent years.

In ordering the unsealing, the judge rejected privacy concerns, noting Epstein’s death and the widespread public discussion of the purported note.

Oklahoma Sooners offer 2028 quarterback out of Florida

TheOklahoma Soonershave their quarterback situation settled for the next few years withJohn Mateerset to start in 2026, followed by a quarterback competition between Whitt Newbauer and 2026 signeeBowe Bentleyfor the job in 2027. Expected to join the roster next January is four-star quarterbackJamison Robertsout of Alabama. For 2028, the Sooners have their eyes on a prospect out of Florida.

USA TODAY

On Monday evening, the Sooners issued an offer to 2028 three-star quarterback Brady Quinn. Quinn is of no relation to the former Notre Dame quarterback of the same name.

The 2028 prospect is simply a gamer. In his highlights, there are a number of incredible improvisational moments where he escapes pressure to make a throw downfield. Beyond the playmaking ability, Quinn displays good arm strength and accuracy to throw to all levels of the passing game. He has a nice deep ball and displays really good placement on throws to the corner of the end zone.

Quinn has the athleticism to make plays as a runner with enough speed to run away from the defense and good lateral agility to make defenders miss in the open field.

According to 247Sports, Quinn has 17 Power Four offers. In addition to the Sooners, he's been offered by notable programs like Indiana, Florida,Florida State,Ole Miss, South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. He's also taken unofficial visits to Notre Dame, Alabama, and Clemson.

He's the third quarterback to receive an offer from the Sooners in the 2028 cycle. Oklahoma's also offered Graham Simpson from Tennessee and Trey Tagliaferri from New Jersey.

Braun missed 38 games during the regular season after suffering a severe left ankle sprain on Nov. 12. He initially tried to return on Jan. 4, but after struggling for three games, it was clear he wasn’t ready. He was able to run. He wasn’t able to jump. He went back on the shelf for another three weeks, then spent the rest of the season growing accustomed to a routine of postgame treatment on the ankle. He had torn the ligaments on the inside and outside of it. It was the first serious injury of his basketball career. It continued to swell up during the playoffs. Meanwhile,he also sustained an injury and developed swelling in his left calf in Game 1 against the Timberwolves, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation. It exacerbated Braun’s inability to explode off the ground — his left leg is the one he usually pushes off of when he jumps.

What to know about hantavirus, the illness suspected in a cruise ship outbreak

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A hantavirus is suspected of causing anoutbreak aboard a cruise shipthat has killed three people and sickened others.

Associated Press

Studies indicate hantaviruses have been around for centuries, with outbreaks documented in Asia and Europe. In the Eastern Hemisphere, it has been linked with hemorrhagic fever and kidney failure. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that a previously unknown group of hantaviruses emerged in the southwestern United States as the cause of an acute respiratory disease now known hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

The disease gained attention last year after lateactor Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, died from a hantavirus infectionin New Mexico.

The World Health Organization said in a statement Sunday that detailed investigations of the cruise ship outbreak are ongoing, including further laboratory testing and epidemiological investigations. Sequencing of the virus also is ongoing.

The virus is spread by rodents and more rarely, people

Hantavirus is mainly spread by contact with rodents or their urine, saliva or droppings, particularly when the material is disturbed and becomes airborne, posing risk of inhalation. People are typically exposed to hantavirus around their homes, cabins or sheds, especially when cleaning out enclosed spaces with little ventilation or exploring areas where there are mouse droppings.

The WHO says that while rare, hantaviruses may spread between people.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began tracking the virus after a 1993 outbreak in the Four Corners region — the area where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet.

It was an astute physician with the Indian Health Service who first noticed a pattern of deaths among young patients, saidMichelle Harkins, a pulmonologist with the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center who for years has been studying the disease and helping patients.

Most U.S. cases are in Western states. New Mexico and Arizona are hotspots, Harkins said, likely because the odds are greater for mouse-human encounters in rural areas.

The illness starts with flu-like symptoms

An infection can rapidly progress and become life-threatening. Experts say it can start with symptoms that include a fever, chills, muscle aches and maybe a headache.

“Early in the illness, you really may not be able to tell the difference between hantavirus and having the flu,” said Dr. Sonja Bartolome of UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Symptoms of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome usually show between one to eight weeks after contact with an infected rodent. As the infection progresses, patients might experience tightness in the chest, as the lungs fill with fluid.

The other syndrome caused by hantavirus — hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome — usually develops within a week or two after exposure.

Death rates vary by which hantavirus causes the illness. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is fatal in nearly 40% of people infected, while the death rate for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome varies from 1% to 15% of patients, according to the CDC.

A lot of unknowns about the illness and treatment

There is no specific treatment or cure, but early medical attention can increase the chance of survival.

Despite years of research, Harkins said many questions have yet to be answered, including why it can be mild for some people and very severe for others and how antibodies are developed. She and other researchers have been following patients over long periods of time in hopes of finding a treatment.

“A lot of mysteries,” she said, noting that what researchers do know is that rodent exposure is a key.

The best way to avoid the germ is to minimize contact with rodents and their droppings. Use protective gloves and a bleach solution for cleaning up rodent droppings. Public health experts caution against sweeping or vacuuming which can cause virus to get into the air.

Holiday in the Park to return to two Six Flags where it was canceled

Six Flags is bringing Holiday in the Park back to two of its parks, which canceled the popular event last year, but it won't be the same as guests remember.

USA TODAY

The seasonal event will return toSix Flags Great Adventurein Jackson Township, New Jersey andSix Flags Over Georgianear Atlanta,Six Flags Entertainment Corporationannounced on May 5.

"We heard our guests loud and clear," John Reilly, president and CEO of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, said in a statement. "Holiday in the Park has long been a cornerstone event at these properties, and we’ve taken everything we’ve learned to thoughtfully evolve the experience."

The company says this year's event has been "completely redesigned from the ground up."

What's new at Holiday in the Park?

Both Six Flags Over Georgia and Six Flags Great Adventure will transform into living storybooks for the event, with three brand-new, immersive themed lands, and more to come in following years.

Festive highlights will include an indoor walk-through attraction for the whole family, cookie and gingerbread house decorating, seasonal tasting menus and "more live entertainment than ever before," according to a news release.

Most thrill rides and kids' areas will stay open and be decorated with holiday lights at night.

Official operating dates, hours, show lineup and ride details will be announced later, Six Flags said.

The revamped Holiday in the Park event will be more immersive.

Why was Holiday in the Park canceled?

Holiday in the Park was sunsetted at three parks last year, following the2024 merger of Six Flags and Cedar Fair.

The third park wasKings Dominionin Doswell, Virginia.

At the time of the cancellations, Six Flags said, "After much research and planning, we’ve made a strategic decision to focus on delivering exceptional guest experiences during our core operating season − spring through fall," according toAthens Banner-Herald, part of the USA TODAY Network.

While Holiday in the Park is not set to return to Kings Dominion this winter, the Virginia park is expanding its summer offerings. Six Flags told USA TODAY, "we made this decision based on what our guests told us matters most to them right now, which is a stronger summer season. At the same time, we’re continuing to thoughtfully explore winter options for the future and appreciate the passion our guests have for seasonal experiences."
