The Cyclones will make their international debut against a long-time rival in the Wildcats, who have previously played an international game int he 1992 Coca-Cola Classic against Nebraska in Tokyo. The matchup will be a Big 12 Conference matchup and could have major ramifications on the US LBM Coaches Poll, in which both teams are ranked in the preseason.
Iowa State and Kansas State have played each other every year since 1917 in a battle that has been more recently dubbed "Farmageddon." Here's what you about the history of the nickname and its origin:
Origin of 'Farmageddon' nickname
The rivalry between Kansas State and Iowa State dates back to their first head-to-head matchup in 1917, with the teams playing each other every year since. However, the origin of the "Farmageddon" rivalry nickname is much more recent.
"Farmageddon" was coined as a nickname for the longstanding rivalry ahead of a matchup between the Wildcats and Cyclones at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, in 2009. The name — a portmanteau of "farm" and "Armageddon" — is a playful nod to the fact both universities are land-grant institutions.
The name quickly caught on in popularity due to both Kansas and Iowa being dependent on farming and agriculture for their respective state economies. Unfortunately, fans will only have two more "Farmageddon" games, in 2026 and 2027, before the longest uninterrupted rivalry in college football takes a hiatus due to the new scheduling for the Big 12 Conference.
