Diane Keaton never liked praise, says her longtime pal Goldie Hawn, but that won't stop Hollywood from celebrating the late star.
Hawn has joined the chorus of voices honoring the life and legacy of Keaton after the news of her death on Saturday. The beloved actress, known for her iconic roles in films like *Annie Hall,* *The Godfather, *and *Something's Gotta Give*, was 79.
"Diane, we aren't ready to lose you," said Hawn, who starred with Keaton in the 1996 comedy *The First Wives Club*, in an emotional Instagram post. "You've left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination. How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can't tell me to 'shut up,' honey. There was, and will be, no one like you."
Hawn went on to salute the milestones of Keaton's career, including their time sharing the screen in *The First Wives Club*.
"You stole the hearts of the world and shared your genius with millions, making films that made us laugh and cry in ways only you could," she continued. "I was blessed to make* First Wives Club *with you, our days starting with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking, right through to the very last day of filming. It was a roller coaster of love."

'The First Wives Club' stars Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler.
She concluded, "We agreed to grow old together, and one day, maybe live together with all our girlfriends. Well, we never got to live together, but we did grow older together. Who knows… maybe in the next life. Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I'm going to miss the hell out of you."
Keaton appeared alongside Hawn and Bette Midler in *The First Wives Club*, in which they played three college friends who become wonderfully wicked divorcées seeking revenge on their terrible former spouses. Since its release in 1996, the film has become a cult classic, inspiring a BET Plus series in 2019 and a musical that ran in San Diego and Chicago.

Midler also reacted to the news of Keaton's death, writing on her own Instagram page, "I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was...oh, la, lala!"
Though *The First Wives Club* left a lasting impression, the film never got a sequel, though one was briefly in the works. In 2009, Hawn said that despite the comedy grossing more than $180 million worldwide, the stars received lowball offers when discussing their salary for a potential sequel. "I got a call from the head of the studio, who said, 'Let's try to make it work. But I think we should all do it for the same amount of money,'" Hawn told *AARP: The Magazine* (per PEOPLE). "Now, if there were three men that came back to do a sequel, they would have paid them three times their salary at least."

In 2022, Midler told PEOPLE that the sequel sadly wasn't meant to be. "I used to lobby for *First Wives Club 2,* but there were political reasons they didn't want to do that again. And it always broke my heart," she said. "I really felt that it was a pretty serious diss, because when women have hits, it's a fluke. But when men have hits, isn't it great? At least that's what they told us on *First Wives*."
The trio had other plans to reunite, starring together in a new comedy called* Family Jewels*, about three women once married to the same man who are forced to spend the holidays together. However, according to Midler, the project got stuck in "development hell."

Following Keaton's death, several former costars and celebrity friends — including Steve Martin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Cynthia Nixon, Mandy Moore, and KaDee Strickland — remembered the acclaimed actress. Hawn's daughter, Kate Hudson, shared a clip of *The First Wives Club*'s famous ending — in which Hawn, Midler, and Keaton dramatically sing Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" — on her Instagram page, captioning the post, "We love you so much, Diane."
Details about Keaton's death are not available at this time, and PEOPLE reported that a family spokesperson expressed her loved ones' desire for privacy.**
