Kristen Bell's real-life marriage has a lot in common with her latest onscreen romance.
The second season of *Nobody Wants This *has finally arrived, beginning a new and very complicated chapter in the relationship between Joanne (Bell) and her rabbi boyfriend. While the details of Bell's own relationship are quite different, the actress says her 12-year marriage to Dax Shepard has faced its fair share of challenges, putting her in the perfect position to offer her character some guidance.
"My advice to Joanne is just calm down a little bit," Bell told PEOPLE in an interview published Thursday. "I feel like she can get very amped up very quickly, and in order to take yourself from a 'me' to a 'we,' it requires a lot of patience."
She continued, "Having someone I feel that is very opposite from me is certainly something that I feel. I feel like my real-life husband and I are 'opposites attract. But that doesn't mean we couldn't make it work, or didn't want to make it work."

Bell, who shares two daughters with the *Parenthood* alum, went on to share that "patience" has been a key element of their relationship, especially when it comes to those differences.
"We did have to have a lot of patience for each other to figure out what the compromises would be," she added. "And a general understanding that we're probably going to have different viewpoints on almost everything and figure out a respectful way to have those discussions."
The first season of *Nobody Wants This *traced the beginnings of a love story between Joanne, who hosts a sex and dating podcast, and Rabbi Noah (played by Adam Brody). After the pair meet at a dinner party and forge an instant connection, they can't help but pursue a relationship — despite the challenges posed by their meddling families and wildly different lives.

Kristen Bell doesn't care if Dax Shepard hooks up with a 'beautiful person' onscreen

Teasing their next chapter to* *'s *Awardist* podcast earlier this year, Bell pointed out that while the couple managed to find some peace by the end of the first season, they're romance is still very young.
"Look, you fall in love with someone and for a while it's just you and them," she told EW. "The world doesn't exist. And then slowly the world starts peeking in and you two have to coexist in the world that sometimes can be shocking."
As for Bell and Shepard, they share more in common with the fictional couple than an "opposites attract" dynamic — their love story *also* began with a meant-to-be dinner party meeting. The actors first crossed paths at an intimate sushi dinner celebrating the birthday of Shauna Robertson, who produced the film that marked Bell's breakout, *Forgetting Sarah Marshall.*
"There were no sparks whatsoever," Bell previously joked to *Today* of their first meeting. "The only thing I remember is that he talked so much."

It wasn't until they ran into each other a second time, at a hockey game two weeks later, that Bell saw the potential for a romantic connection.
"A day after that I get a text that says, 'Hi, my name is Dax. I violated your privacy and got your number from Shauna. How do you feel about that?,'" she recalled. "And I was like, 'Excuse me? You sound stimulating.'"

The couple tied the knot in 2013 and share two daughters, Lincoln and Delta. They recently celebrated their wedding anniversary with a public toast from Bell, which immediately generated backlash on the internet.
"Happy 12th wedding anniversary," the *Frozen* star posted, "to the man who once said to me: 'I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I'm heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.'"
Commenters called the post "insensitive" and "tone deaf," pointing out that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Others attributed the caption to the couple's dark sense of humor. Afterwards, Bell skipped a scheduled appearance Wednesday on the *Today* show.
The second season of *Nobody Wants This* is now available to stream on Netflix.**
