There's a new Harry Bosch on the scene — and he's a rookie.

MGM+ announced Wednesday that *Shameless* star Cameron Monaghan will play a younger, less experienced Bosch for a newly greenlit prequel series exploring the origins of author Michael Connelly's iconic detective. The actor takes over a role portrayed by Titus Welliver for more than a decade.

*Bosch: Start of Watch* will also feature *Power* alum Omari Hardwick as Bosch's training officer, police veteran Eli Bridges, a new character not found in Connelly's book mythology.

The series will take viewers back to Los Angeles in 1991, following Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch as a 26-year-old rookie cop. *Start of Watch* will explore a city on the edge that, according to a logline, is "teeming with racial tension, gang violence, and a fractured LAPD." Amid routine calls and growing unrest, Bosch will find himself drawn into a high-profile heist and a web of criminal corruption testing his loyalty to the badge and shaping his future as the detective who lives by the code "Everybody counts or nobody counts."

Produced by Fabel Entertainment, *Start of Watch* is co-created and executive-produced by *Bosch: Legacy* co-developer and executive producer Tom Bernardo and co-executive producer Brian Anthony, with Bernardo also serving as showrunner. Connelly, Henrik Bastin, Jamie Boscardin Martin, and Jasmine Russ are also on board as EPs.

"It's a terrific privilege to be able to explore both the origins of this iconic character and the Los Angeles that formed him in the early 1990s," Bernardo said in a statement. "In telling the story of a young Harry Bosch, we want to honor the faith of Michael Connelly's legion of readers and the amazing audience that tuned into *Bosch* and *Bosch: Legacy* over the years. We're excited to embark on this journey."

*Start of Watch* marks the fourth installment of the *Bosch* franchise, which began with seven seasons of *Bosch* on Amazon Prime Video. *Bosch: Legacy* followed on Amazon's since-shuttered Freevee platform, and the Maggie Q-led spinoff *Ballard* debuted on Prime Video earlier this year. (*Ballard* has since been renewed for season 2.)

Welliver's sons, Quinn and Eammonn, briefly appeared as younger versions of their father's character in flashback scenes on *Bosch* and *Bosch: Legacy*.

Connelly said of *Start of Watch*, "I'm deeply grateful to Michael Wright [head of MGM+] and the team at MGM+ for championing this next chapter in Bosch's journey with such remarkable care and integrity. Being able to see how Harry Bosch became the man we have loved for 10 seasons is a gift to me and his many fans. I can't wait to dig in with Cameron and the writers to explore this uncharted character territory."

It's been six months since Prime Video released the final two episodes of *Bosch: Legacy* season 3, which seemed to wrap up the main Harry Bosch saga on screen.

"I love Harry Bosch and I miss him. You form a bond with a character over time, and I feel like I keep waiting for him to show up," Welliver told * *ahead of the show's conclusion. "But I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished in 10 years. I've worked with the best writers and actors and producers, and I've had the great fortune to be able to portray a character that I think is deeply nuanced and very intense and multifaceted."

He continued, "It's a tremendous gift, and I think if anything, when I say it feels bad, I just feel sad just because the experience was so incredibly positive for 10 years, and to have such an incredibly devout, dedicated fan base, which is why we lasted 10 years. It's hard to say goodbye to that, but never say never."
