M. Night Shyamalan directing a Magic 8 Ball-inspired series from Mattel? It is decidedly so.
The horror auteur announced the new project on Instagram on Monday with a shot of the cover page of the series' pilot script, weighted down by one of the iconic black orbs. "Been working on this for a couple years... Who's in?" Shyamalan wrote in the caption, adding the hashtags, "#ItIsCertain #Magic8Ball."
The cover page features Shyamalan's name under the director's credit, and under the writer's is Brad Falchuk. A longtime creative collaborator of Ryan Murphy, Falchuk co-created and served as a writer and producer on hit series like *Glee*, *American Horror Story*, *9-1-1*, and *Pose*.
Mattel Studios, the development wing of the iconic toy brand behind 2023's smash success *Barbie*, co-shared Shyamalan's post, and is co-producing the series.
* *has reached out to representatives for Shyamalan, Falchuk, and Mattel Studios.

In a separate release issued Monday, Mattel noted that with this new "premium scripted live-action television series," Shyamalan and Falchuk "aim to reimagine the classic Magic 8 Ball as the centerpiece of a high-concept, character-driven supernatural drama that blends psychological intensity with cultural intrigue."
Prior to *Barbie*, Mattel's sole domain in the world of film and television were animated series like *Team Hot Wheels *and *Barbie and the Secret Door*, and animated films like the *Monster High *series. Following the stupendous success of Greta Gerwig's live-action adaptation of the famed doll, the company launched numerous projects into development, including a *Hot Wheels *movie from Jon M. Chu and a Barney movie starring Daniel Kaluuya.****

Shyamalan, meanwhile, is fresh off the success of 2024's *Trap*, a psychological thriller starring Josh Hartnett. As Magic 8 Ball begins its slow roll onto the small screen, he's currently working on *Remain*, a supernatural romance starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, which coincides with a novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, which Shyamalan co-wrote.
This year marks Falchuk's big first steps away from the Ryan Murphy-verse, soon with Magic 8 Ball but first with *Famous Last Words*. The Netflix series centers on never-before-seen interiviews with famous figures that have recently died. The first episode, released on Oct. 3, featured an interview with Jane Goodall, who died two days earlier.
