Afterwards, the comedian announced some "breaking news": he will become the first comedian to ever play Wrigley Field next July

The hometown show will take place at the historic venue on July 11, 2026

John Mulaney is making history in his hometown.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Chicago native surprised fans at the Chicago Cubs game to sing the 7th inning stretch — but he didn't stop there. He also joined the team's local network, Marquee Sports, in the booth to announce that he is bringing his Mister Whatever stand-up tour to Chicago next summer.

"There's breaking news," Mulaney, 43, revealed from the press box. "I'm very excited to say: July 11, 2026, I'll be the first comedian to ever play Wrigley Field."

"It's really cool," the comedian said after making the announcement, before fielding some questions about how big a venue Wrigley truly is.

"This is a real, like, 35,000-seat venue, but look, if [former Cubs player] Mark Grace could come out there every day and just deliver, ripping cigarettes, I can face down this crowd too," Mulaney quipped. "I'm so excited for it."

In a selfie-style video taken from down on the field, Mulaney — who was born and raised in Chicago and returned to the city for My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman in 2024 — reiterated his excitement at becoming the "first comedian to ever play Wrigley Field in its history."

"I'm very honored," he said. "Here in my hometown."

Per a press release, the Wrigley Field show is a "true milestone in both the stadium's legacy and Mulaney's career," as he joins "the short list of the world's most prominent artists who have made [Wrigley's] stage their own."

Mulaney kicked off the Mister Whatever tour in June, and initially announced a slew of dates across the country through December. The tour will continue through 2026 and expand into larger venues, with Wrigley Field as "a centerpiece moment of the run."

Mulaney's fans had been regularly asking the comedian to add a show in Chicago as he announced further expansions of the tour and new dates on Instagram.

"John Mulaney comes to Chicago challenge: impossible," one fan wrote on an August post announcing additional dates for the tour. "What did Chicago ever do to you John," wrote another.
