Ricky Gervais deletes posts roasting Hannah Einbinder and other TV stars for political speeches at 2025 Emmys

"If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech," Gervais said in 2020. "You're in no position to lecture the public about anything."

Following Sunday night's Emmys, a few passionate political remarks from the ceremony have made the rounds online… And Ricky Gervais isn't a fan.

In response to some of the speeches and red carpet clips from the 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the comedian reacted by resharing a five-year-old X post quoting a snippet of his 2020 Golden Globes monologue, in which he blasted Hollywood stars for getting political while accepting their awards.

"If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech," Gervais instructed at the time. "You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg."

Following the awards show, Gervais quoted the post with the laugh-crying emoji and the caption, "They're still not listening."

Additionally, *The Office *alum shared a post directly commenting on remarks made by *Hacks* actress and Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder. During a backstage Emmys interview, Einbinder told reporters that she used her speech to address the conflict in Palestine because she believes she has an "obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel."

An X user responded to this clip by citing another quote from Gervais' Globes monologue in which he said: "If ISIS started a streaming service, you'd call your agent, wouldn't you?"**

The comedian has since deleted his X post and unshared the above post. The immediate response to Gervais was mixed, with some praising his past remarks while others slammed the comedian. One X user said that Gervais' 2020 speech "Ages like a fine wine."

Another wrote, "The cowardice and irrelevance of Gervais grows every single day." Added another, "You don't need to know 'about the real world' to call out genocide. What's the alternative? Also, don't mistake your own ignorance & apathy as universal or admirable."

Representatives for Gervais did not immediately respond to **'s request for comment.

As for the "political speech" that Gervais took issue with, his posts are likely in reference to Einbinder. After winning her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, the *Hacks* star ended her emotional speech by shouting out the Philadelphia Eagles and making the first major political statement of the night.

"Go Birds, f--- ICE and free Palestine," she stated, before walking off with her statuette.

Prior to taking the stage, Einbinder walked the Emmys red carpet while wearing a red Artists4Ceasefire pin, an accessory that asks that the U.S. government call for an "immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost." The pin was also worn by *Presumed Innocent*'s Ruth Negga,* The White Lotus* stars Aimee Lou Wood and Natasha Rothwell, Chris Perfetti of *Abbott Elementary*, and fellow *Hacks* star Megan Stalter. The latter actress was also carrying a bag that declared, "Cease Fire!"

Speaking to *Variety* before the ceremony, Stalter said, "It's most important to stick up for people and for peace... We have to use our platforms and say what's important to us. What's the point of being at these big events if you're not going to use your privilege?"

Similarly, Emmy nominee Javier Bardem walked the red carpet wearing a keffiyeh, a Middle Eastern scarf that has become a widely recognized symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance. While chatting with reporters, he denounced the "genocide in Gaza," called for a "free Palestine," and made it clear that he will not work with companies that are in business with the Israeli government.

"I cannot work with somebody that justifies or supports the genocide," he said. "That's as simple as that. We shouldn't be able to do that, in this industry or any other industry."

On the actual Emmys stage, few references to politics were made. While honoring the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds such programs as *Sesame Street *and *Finding Your Roots*, Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego noted that Congress voting to defund the institution puts the likes of PBS and NPR in jeopardy.

"In many small towns, those stations weren't just a cultural lifeline; they were the only Emergency Alert System families could count on. But at the end of this year, CPB will close its doors because Congress has voted to defund it," Abrego said, prompting the audience to boo.

Stephen Colbert also made a brief and vague reference to politics while accepting his win for *The Late Show*, telling the crowd, "In September of 2025, my friends, I have never loved my country more desperately. God bless America. Stay strong, be brave and if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy and punch a higher floor!"**
