A youth baseball coach is recovering after being shot in the shoulder during a Sunday morning game.
The game was being played in Katy, Texas, west of Houston — with players as young as 11 — when "an unfortunate incident occurred," the venue said in a statement posted to Facebook Sunday.
According to the venue, The Rac, the coach was shot in the shoulder after a "recreational shooting on a nearby property."
Several gunshots rang out during the game, one of which ricocheted off of a pole and struck the 27-year-old coach, NBC News affiliate KPRC of Houston reported.
The condition of the coach, who has yet to be identified, was not immediately clear. KPRC reported that he was flown by the Life Flight air ambulance service to a hospital following the shooting and that he is expected to recover.
Video of the shooting posted to Facebook appears to show a number of players and coaches warming up on the field as multiple loud pops are heard. After a few seconds, they all ran off the field and for cover. Voices in the video can be heard instructing people to "get down."
The Rac said the shooting may have occurred as a result of illegal hunting, which it said is commonplace in the "country."
"People shoot on their land all the time. At the time we were unaware of anything in season," The Rac wrote in a Facebook comment. "Now that we have more information, we know that their were 3 individuals target practicing 600/700 yards away."
The Rac said it contacted local police, who responded and are working to apprehend those responsible for the shooting. The Katy Police Department did not respond to a request for more information sent Monday morning by NBC News.
KPRC reported that three people were questioned in connection with the shooting but that no arrests have been made, citing authorities.
"Just a TERRIBLE accident. Our thought and prayers go out to all the families," The Rac wrote.
The Rac said it is working with law enforcement and is working on its own internal review of the incident. All activities at the fields have been suspended.
"The safety and well-being of our players, families, coaches, staff, and community is our top priority," The Rac said in a second statement on Facebook. "We are deeply shaken by what happened, and our focus remains on supporting the coach who was injured, his family, and everyone who was affected."
Colton Bierman, 11, plays for the Texas Colts, one of the teams playing at The Rac on Sunday.
"I have to legit bear crawl to my mom on my arms," Bierman told KPRC.
His mom, Kelly Bierman, said: "We need to look at where people are shooting and people are hunting because it's not safe for our kids," KPRC reported.
Texas Colts Coaches Alex Smith and Corbin Giesendorf told KPRC they helped move players and families off of the field and toward safety after they heard the gunshots.
They also told the outlet that they heard faint gunshots at The Rac on Saturday, but that Sunday's shots were closer.
The Texas Colts said it will be more selective about where the team plays future games, KPRC reported.
