Director Shawn Levy shared a new look at Ryan Gosling and his young costar Flynn Gray on the set of their upcoming film *Star Wars: Starfighter*, with a blue sky above them and an even bluer body of water behind them.
"Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea," Levy teased in his Instagram caption.**
In the photo, both actors are wearing gloves and leaning on what appears to be sailing equipment, standing atop a platform that looks like part of a sea vessel. The pic honestly wouldn't look too out of place if scattered among a bunch of *Waterworld* behind-the-scenes photos, which is surprising given *Star Wars*' general avoidance of nautical fare in live action. (Granted, we've explored the underwater depths of Naboo's oceans and glimpsed Kef Bir's choppy waves in previous films, but the movies have spent far more time sailing over sand dunes than on water.)
Very little is known about the plot or premise of *Starfighter*. Levy described the film as a "standalone" project, which means it will not take on a Roman-numeraled episode number as most of the previous movies have (though its title also hasn't taken on the *Star Wars Story* subtitle that fellow spinoffs *Rogue One* and *Solo* bore).
"It's not a prequel, not a sequel," the filmmaker said at *Star Wars* Celebration in April. "It's a new adventure. It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet."
At the same event, Gosling teased that the movie's script is "just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters."**
Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, more join Ryan Gosling for 'Star Wars: Starfighter' as production begins

*Starfighter* character details have yet to be disclosed, but we do know that the film takes place roughly five years after *The Rise of Skywalker*, which will make it the latest point in the *Star Wars* timeline depicted on screen thus far.
Gosling and Gray seem to be playing the movie's central duo, while Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings are also set to appear.**

"I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on *Star Wars: Starfighter*," Levy said in a statement last month. "*Star Wars* shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators on screen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime."
*Star Wars: Starfighter* is scheduled to hit theaters May 28, 2027. Before that, the *Star Wars* universe will expand with *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, a theatrical movie follow-up to the Disney+ series *The Mandalorian* starring Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin. That film will arrive May 22, 2026.**
