Rainn Wilson thinks NBC made a mistake by not picking up *The Farm*, his spinoff of *The Office*, which would have centered on his eccentric character, Dwight Schrute, and his time away from Dunder Mifflin.
"NBC at that time had a new regime that came in and they wanted to do big, bright, flashy, splashy shows that were multi-cams and going back to a *Friends* kind of a thing," Wilson said on a recent episode of The Daily Beast's *The Last Laugh* podcast. "They were just not interested at all in *Office* spinoffs at the time. And had they taken *The Farm*, they'd probably have another billion dollars in the bank. No one talks about that."

For Wilson, who played Dwight on all nine seasons of the mockumentary-style comedy that aired from 2005 to 2013, it's simple math.
"Even now, all the people that have seen* The Office* 20 times, they're going to watch *The Farm* at least once or twice, if you've got 100 episodes," Wilson said. "Would it have been as good as *The Office*? No. No way. Not even close. Would it have been good? Would it have been solid? Would it have been a good, solid comedy? Yeah, it would've, and we would've done some really cool stuff. And I think they really missed out."
A backdoor pilot for *The Farm* aired during the final season of the workplace comedy that also starred Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Craig Robinson, and Mindy Kaling. But *The Farm*, which would've seen Dwight at his family beet farm, was not picked up to series.

Rainn Wilson calls this episode of 'The Office' 'jaw-droppingly' offensive

Looking back, Wilson said he was not surprised. Back then, *The Office *was popular, but it wasn't the juggernaut that it's since become after audiences could binge it on streaming services watch in reruns on cable.
"The history of *The Office *on NBC — they never really got the show," Wilson said. "Honestly, it was like five years after the show was over, when all of a sudden it started being watched — the minutes in the billions on Netflix — that NBC was like, 'Oh, wait a minute. This is kind of a cash cow. This is actually a really good show and it's got some legs.'"

Although Wilson appeared frustrated that his time playing Dwight ended, there was some happiness, too.**
"It was like 10 top 20 percent disappointment and 80 percent relief," he said. "It was a big relief of like, 'OK, good. I'm not going to do any more seasons of Dwight.'"
Since *The Office* ended, Wilson has appeared in projects, including the limited series *Lessons in Chemistry*; the movies *Weird: The Al Yankovic Story *and* The Meg*; and TV series such as *Utopia* and *Mom*.**
