Dax Shepard wasn't sure that he would ever fall in love again — and then he met Kristen Bell.

The 50-year-old actor admitted as much during a special episode of his *Armchair Expert* podcast, which saw him delve into his nine-year relationship before meeting his future wife. He was joined by ex-girlfriend Briegh Morrison, with the former couple looking back on their long-term open relationship and divulging how they dealt with its end.

Shepard at one point shared that though the split was as "amicable as it could be" after nearly a decade together, he still struggled to see himself moving on with someone else.

"The breakup was manageable, but I will say, for a while, I did think, 'Well, I'll never be in love with someone again in that way,'" Shepard admitted. "I had a deep fear. I'm like, 'Oh, I don't think I'll ever really feel the way I felt about Briegh with anybody.' I was quite scared of that."

Morrison pointed out that it was all the more difficult because they split when the relationship was so well-established. "One of the hardest things about when we broke up was that I really had my head around — we were gonna have kids," she shared. "We had a house. It was gonna be this thing that I wanted, and I was getting on in years."

Shepard agreed, pointing out that the pair planned to "go for it" and start trying for kids around her thirtieth birthday, only to break up right before that period came. The *Parenthood* alum shared that it took a few years before he was truly dating again in earnest.

"I was just very disoriented for a while, and I remember, I was shooting a movie in New York City, staying at the Maritime Hotel by myself and I was single," he recalled. "Even though we were in an open relationship, I obviously never felt single. We had been broken up for probably maybe a year at that point, and I remember going, 'Oh, this is *fun*. I'm single in New York City and I work two days a week.' And it kind of lifted a bit."

Despite his fears, Shepard eventually found love with Bell, whom he met in 2007 at a friend's dinner party. Three years later, they announced their engagement. The couple, who tied the knot in 2013, now share daughters Lincoln and Delta. As for Morrison, she married Brad Winderbaum, a production and development executive at Marvel Studios.

At one point in their conversation, Shepard revealed that Winderbaum and Bell once went on a date in college. But Morrison argued otherwise, claiming, "She was dating one of his friends."

Shepard replied, "She thinks they went on a date."

The actor, who has remained good friends with Morrison and her husband, later pointed out that Bell hasn't forged the same connections with her own exes and didn't initially understand their lasting relationship.

"Initially, when Kristen and I started dating, you were still coming over a lot because my mom was living at my house," Shepard recalled. "You were around even in like the first month or two we were dating. And she had initially was like, 'This is really wild. I'm not friends with any of my exes. I don't hang out with any.' And I'm like, 'I'm friends with all mine pretty much.'"

He added, "Over time, she got super comfortable with it and absolutely at ease with it."

Shepard's reunion with Morrison comes days after his 12th wedding anniversary with Bell, an occasion that put the couple at the center of some controversy. Bell marked the occasion on Friday, sharing a photo of the two in a sweet embrace.

"Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: 'I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I'm heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would,'" Bell captioned the post. Shepard's comments were met with a wave of backlash from social media users who labeled the post "tone deaf" and "insensitive" for making light of violence in a relationship.**
