Joseph Quinn won't be running up that hill. As the *Stranger Things* creators confirm, he's "fully under that ground."

The Duffer Brothers set the record straight by saying the English actor's fan-favorite character, Eddie Munson, won't feature in season 5 of the hit Netflix show.

"I love that Joe Quinn is toying with people! But no, he's dead," Matt Duffer told *Empire* in an interview with his brother and co-creator, Ross Duffer. "Joe is so busy anyway, that everyone should know he's not coming back. He's shot like five movies since! When the hell has he got time to come and shoot *Stranger Things*? No, sadly, RIP. He's fully under that ground."

That may sound like an odd thing to definitively state, but we have seen previously killed-off characters appear in subsequent *Stranger Things* seasons. Notably in season 4, Dacre Montgomery returned as the ghost of Billy to haunt his sister, Max (Sadie Sink), by way of Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

Matt Duffer was also referring to moments like a June 2024 interview with *Entertainment Tonight*, when Quinn said "chances were high" for an Eddie comeback. The actor, whose film credits include *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, *Gladiator II*, and *A Quiet Place: Day One*, then appeared at a fan convention later that year when a guest asked him whether he'd be back as Eddie in the final season of *Stranger Things*. He responded, "I do know, but I'm not telling you."

Welp, now we know.

Eddie became a standout character when he arrived in season 4 as the dungeon master of the Hellfire Club, Hawkins High's *Dungeons & Dragons* club. He went out in a blaze of glory, shredding his guitar to Metallica's "Master of Puppets" in the Upside Down before a vicious swarm of Demo-bats tore him apart.

The character's presence will still be felt in *Stranger Things 5*, however. The trailers reveal snippets of Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) visiting Eddie's gravesite, which has been vandalized by those who believe he was responsible for the deaths of Hawkins students.

*Stranger Things* season 5 will be released in three parts. The first four episodes will arrive Nov. 26, followed by the next three episodes on Christmas Day and the series finale on New Year's Eve.
