- Marvel Studios quietly removed an untitled film from their calendar on Tuesday.

- The film was originally set to release on July 23, 2027.

- A second *Simpsons* movie will now release on that date instead of a Marvel film.

Disney quietly removed an untitled Marvel movie from its upcoming release calendar on Tuesday.

The announcement came alongside the revelation that the studio will release a second *Simpsons *movie on July 23, 2027 — a date that was originally held for an untitled Marvel Studios project.

The news comes a year after Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the company would "decrease volume" for Marvel Studios during an earnings call, noting that the superhero studio would now release "two or a maximum of three" theatrical movies per year.

But why was this mystery movie removed from Marvel's calendar, and what does the shift mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Here's our guide to the latest calendar shakeup from Marvel Studios.

When was this movie going to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline?

The answer is complicated. The most recent version of Marvel Studios' calendar would have seen the untitled film release between two back-to-back *Avengers* movies — but that wasn't always the plan.

Now that the July 2027 spot has been vacated, Marvel Studios now will only release one movie per year for the next two years: *Avengers: Doomsday*, which arrives in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026; and *Avengers: Secret Wars*, which hits the big screen a year later on Dec. 17, 2027.

The untitled movie leaving that July release date also means that we won't see any Marvel Cinematic Universe films between the two *Avengers* movies, which are expected to comprise a two-part crossover event similar to 2018's *Infinity War* and 2019's *Endgame*. (However, Marvel did release *Ant-Man and the Wasp* and *Captain Marvel* in between those previous *Avengers* movies, though they both took place prior to *Infinity War*.)

It's worth noting that the mystery July 2027 Marvel movie was not originally scheduled to come out between those *Avengers* movies, as *Doomsday* was originally scheduled to release in May 2025, and *Secret Wars* was set to premiere in November of the same year. They were then delayed to May 2026 and May 2027, respectively. In earlier versions of that calendar, the untitled movie would have come after *Secret Wars*.

That means that the now removed July 2027 movie was originally intended to be the first Marvel movie *after* the two-part *Avengers* event, which presumably means that its story would address the fallout from *Doomsday* and *Secret Wars*, and would be the first movie in whatever comes after the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. Since the *Avengers* movies will conclude the MCU's Phase 6, it's safe to assume that this mystery movie would have been (and still could be!) the first movie in Phase 7.

Marvel never announced which movie was originally set for that July 2027 date, but has a number of projects in development that hypothetically could have filled that slot.

*Sinners* filmmaker Ryan Coogler has repeatedly teased his return to the *Black Panther *franchise for a third installment following his work on 2018's *Black Panther* and 2022's *Wakanda Forever* — and said that the threequel will star Denzel Washington. Meanwhile, Destin Daniel Cretton, who is currently directing *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, is expected to reunite with Simu Liu for a sequel to 2021's *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, which was announced in December 2021.

Additionally, after *X-Men* actors like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reprise their mutant roles in *Doomsday*, *Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier will helm a new *X-Men* film for Marvel Studios with a new cast. And Don Cheadle will reprise his role as James "Rhodey" Rhodes (aka War Machine) in *Armor Wars*, which was originally conceived as a Disney+ series before being retooled into a theatrical film. However, producer Nate Moore recently suggested that *Armor Wars* is no longer on the studio's "front burner" of development.

And *Blade*, which was originally announced in 2019, still has yet to enter production. Mahershala Ali is set to portray the titular vampire hunter.

Other potential Marvel projects on the horizon include *Doctor Strange 3*, a secret project produced by Scarlett Johansson, and another *Deadpool*-adjacent mutant movie featuring Ryan Reynolds.**

What is the next Marvel Studios project?

The next MCU movie will be *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*. Set to release on July 31, 2026, Tom Holland's fourth Spidey film will be released by Sony rather than Disney, but will still factor into the latter company's cinematic universe.

Most of Disney's upcoming Marvel projects will come on the small screen. *Wonder Man*, which stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, will premiere on Disney+ in December. *Daredevil: Born Again*, which premiered in March, will debut a second season in March 2026. And *Vision Quest*, which will see Paul Bettany return as the titular synthezoid, is also expected to premiere in 2026.

Marvel also has four untitled theatrical movies set to release in 2028 on Feb. 18, May 5, Nov. 10, and Dec. 15.
