As the NCAA makes changes to its transfer portal calendar, it's also making tweaks to the timeframe players have to transfer after a coaching change.
The NCAA announced Tuesday that it was set to shorten the transfer window after coaching changes from 30 to 15 days and also alter when that window takes place. Per the Division I Administrative Committee, the transfer portal would open after a school hires its next head coach.

The NCAA also officially announced that it had approved the launch of a 15-day single transfer portal window to begin on Jan. 2. The single window replaces the two transfer portal opportunities players have had previously. Before the 2025 season, players had a chance to transfer at the end of the season and during the spring.

Currently, players have 30 days to put their names in the transfer portal as soon as their head coach is fired. Players at schools like UCLA, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State are in the middle of their 30-day transfer windows following coaching changes at each of those three schools. And given that all three of those schools fired their coaches with fewer than four games played this season, players at each of those schools have the opportunity to redshirt for the rest of the 2025 season upon entering the transfer portal.
That option would be taken away under the new rule if it is officially approved on Wednesday. If a school fires a coach after Week 4 but doesn't hire his permanent replacement until after the conclusion of the season, the 15-day portal opens on the day the coach's hire becomes official.
