How many concussions has Tua Tagovailoa had?
Tagovailoa has suffered four documented concussions during his career. Three of them have come since entering the NFL.
Perhaps the most concerning part of Tagovailoa's extensive concussion history is the frequency with which they occurred. All four of those diagnosed concussions have come since 2019, but the previous three happened between Sept. 25, 2022 and Sept. 12, 2024.
Tua Tagovailoa concussion history -
Nov. 16, 2019: As a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Tagovailoa suffered his first documented concussion. At the time, the quarterback was just 21 years old. After taking a sack against Mississippi State on this day, Tagovailoa suffered a fractured pelvis, dislocated his hip, broke his nose and suffered a concussion. Tagovailoa wouldn't play another game for Alabama and then entered the 2020 NFL Draft.
Sept. 25, 2022: Tagovailoa took a hit from Bills' linebacker Matt Milano in Week 3. After attempting to get up, the quarterback stumbled and fell to the ground in what was a scary scene that evolved on the field. He was removed from the game, but later returned. Miami called it a "back injury" and there was concern that the team violated concussion protocol.
Sept. 29, 2022: Just four days removed from the supposed back injury, Tagovailoa and the Dolphins made the trip to Cincinnati for a "Thursday Night Football" matchup. Tagovailoa started the contest, but departed in the second quarter after taking a sack. The quarterback's head slammed into the field and this was where the famous "fencing response" entered the vocabulary of NFL fans. Tagovailoa was unconscious after the hit and required a hospital visit for the head and neck injuries. He would miss just two games before returning for Miami.
Dec. 26, 2022: A few months removed from the incident in Cincinnati, Tagovailoa entered concussion protocol again on this day. It came after the quarterback threw three interceptions against the Packers on Christmas Day and Tagovailoa would miss the last two games of the season.
Sept. 12, 2024: For the second time in as many years, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion against the Bills and yet another one on "Thursday Night Football." This time it came on a scramble for a first down in the third quarter. Tagovailoa ran into Damar Hamlin and fell to the ground, once again display the fencing response. The quarterback would miss the next four games after the third concussion of his NFL career.
