*Chicago P.D. *star Patrick John Flueger is taking a leave of absence from the NBC drama.
Flueger, who has portrayed Adam Ruzek since the series premiered in 2014, is taking the time to deal with a personal matter and plans to return later this season, ** has learned.
Scripts are being changed now, *Deadline* reported, because the move was unexpected.
The actor has been a cast member in all 12 seasons so far — one of just four original cast members still on the show, which debuted its 13th season this month.

EW has reached out to NBC and Flueger for comment.
In season 12, Flueger's Adam married Kim Burgess, played by Marina Squerciati. The beloved couple of Ruzek and Burgess — known as Burzek — tied the knot in the season 12 finale.
At the time, Squerciati told EW that her onscreen groom "was really nervous. It was funny."
She explained, too, that they hadn't shot actual vows for the wedding scene.

"It was silent. It was just silent," the actress said. "You might hear me, if you were going to do the behind-the-scenes, I'm like, 'When can I get out of these heels?' I'm not used to working in heels. I'm glad I'm not on a lawyer show."
So far this season, the two have raised their adopted young daughter in Canaryville, the Chicago neighborhood where he grew up. But Kim has broached the subject of living in a new place with better schools that would help their daughter's overall well-being.
In addition to the Dick Wolf drama, Flueger is also known for his appearances on the other *Chicago* universe shows, *Chicago Med and Chicago Fire*, but also for movies such as *Brothers*, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Natalie Portman, and the 2011 version of *Footloose*.
*Chicago P.D. *airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
